Carolinensiel museum harbor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The museum harbor Carolinensiel is the old sluice port of Carolinensiel , which is used today as a berth for old flat-bottomed ships .

history

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Carolinensiel had the second largest East Frisian sluice and trading port on the North Sea coast. At the beginning of the 20th century its economic importance decreased more and more. When the upstream Harlesieler Hafen was built between 1953 and 1956 , the harbor in Carolinensiel, which had already been partially silted up, was filled in. The Sielhafenmuseum opened in the early 1980s, pushing the reconstruction of the port into a museum harbor . In 1986 the expansion of the historic port began. 1.8 million Deutschmarks were spent on this. The Friedrichsschleuse was again provided with a bascule bridge . The museum harbor was opened on September 9, 1987 and the first ships could call at Carolinensiel again. A special highlight is the annual Sielhafenfest, a meeting of traditional ships, which takes place on the second weekend in August . Many buildings along the east and west side of the port are listed , and the port is also a group monument . Today the exhibitions of the German Sielhafenmuseum are housed in three of the old buildings.
