The Buss-Mühle (spelling also Buss or Bußmühle ; alternatively also called Bruchmühle ) is a listed tower - Dutch windmill in Krefeld - Uerdingen .

history

The mill was built in 1795 northwest of Uerdingen to meet the growing need for flour of the growing population of the city of Uerdingen. Because of its location on the Bruchfeld at Uerdinger Bruch , it was and is also called Bruchmühle . At first it was called Neue Mühle to distinguish it from the considerably older Uerdinger Stadtmühle (today's Owl Tower ) .

In 1831 both Uerdingen windmills were sold to the Krefeld miller Terhegen . Later the mills came into the possession of the Lower Rhine miller family Hermanns-Hardering and from then on was also called Hermannsmühle .

In 1896 the heiress of the mill, a granddaughter of the former miller Wenzel Hardering , married the miller Carl Buss . The couple continued the business and the mill has been known as Buss Mill ever since . In addition to the mill, the Buss family also built a bakery in which their own flour was processed.

The mill operation continued until 1930, but at last with motor instead of wind power - the blades of the mill were dismantled between 1910 and 1915. The Buss'sche bakery, whose trademark was the mill, was continued after the mill was closed.

The mill remained unused for more than 60 years after it was closed. In the 1990s, the building, which was now a listed building, was externally restored and again received a winged cross based on the old model, but no longer powered a grinder. Today the mill is registered under number 374 in the corresponding list of the city of Krefeld .

In 2012, living spaces were set up inside the mill property.

Structure and technology

The Bussmühle is a typical Dutch tower of the Lower Rhine design. In contrast to the Dutch models, the tower on the Lower Rhine is usually not designed as a wooden, clad octagonal , but round and made of brick .

The wings were sail gate wings. The mill was a Erd- or Wall-Dutch , i. H. the wings were accessible from the ground or from a rampart built up around the mill or from the roof of an outbuilding. The wing cross was also turned (crouching) in front of the wind from there by means of a sword bar system (Sterz) attached to the rear of the cap .
