The German Sielhafenmuseum Carolinensiel is a museum in the Wittmund district of Carolinensiel . It was opened on June 8, 1984 and is a member of the Museum Association of East Friesland .

history

On August 5, 1978, the director of the Maritime Museum Bremerhaven , Gerd Schlechtriem , suggested the creation of the museum, which led to the foundation of the Sielhafenmuseum Carolinensiel support group. The first chairman of the sponsorship group was Ferich Eilts, who subsequently tried to acquire exhibits.

The Steinbrecher company transferred the "Groot Huus", a former granary from 1840, located in Carolinensiel and under monument protection, to the city of Wittmund for museum purposes. In 1979, the approval of the state government of Lower Saxony created the legal basis for the museum location.

After the repair of the Groot Huus and the restoration of the museum objects with a grant of 400,000 DM from job creation measures , the opening took place in 1984. (Officially May 16, 1986 by the Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture Johann-Tönjes Cassens ). The museum was further developed in the following years with public funds and support from the East Frisian landscape .

In 1986 the expansion of the Carolinensiel museum harbor began with a financial outlay of 1.8 million Deutschmarks. The harbor was reopened on September 9, 1987, and the Friedrichsschleuse on August 11, 1990. In 1992/1993 the "Alte Pastorei" was renovated for 1.4 million Deutschmarks. As early as 1993, the museum welcomed 60,000 visitors a year.

In 1991 the first meeting of traditional sailors took place in Carolinensiel, which has taken place annually since then.
