The Lower Saxony state government is the government of the state of Lower Saxony . The state government consists of the prime minister and the ministers . The current state government has been in office since November 22, 2017 and is a coalition government based on an agreement between the SPD and CDU . The Prime Minister is Stephan Weil , a lawyer from Hanover . Its official seat is in the Lower Saxony State Chancellery in Hanover, Planckstrasse 2.

According to Article 29 of the Lower Saxony Constitution , the Prime Minister is elected by the Lower Saxony State Parliament in a secret ballot. This appoints the ministers. The state government requires confirmation from the state parliament in order to take office. According to Article 30, however, this requirement does not apply if it is not met within 21 days of the meeting of the state parliament or the resignation of the government and the state parliament does not dissolve afterwards, but re-elects a prime minister, as happened in 1976 when Ernst Albrecht was elected.
