Carola Reimann (born August 25, 1967 in Goch ) is a German politician ( SPD ). Since November 22, 2017, she has been Lower Saxony's Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Equality in the Weil II cabinet .

Life and work

After graduating from secondary school in Goch in 1987 , Carola Reimann studied biotechnology at the Technical University of Braunschweig and graduated in 1993 with a degree in biotechnology. She then worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Technology of the Federal Agricultural Research Center in Braunschweig , where in 1999 their promotion to Dr. rer. nat. with the work Bioconversion of glycerine to 1,3-propanediol with immobilized cells” . After working as a consultant in the field of “ Public Health ” from 1998 , she worked from 2000 as a project manager for medical marketing.

Political party

Reimann joined the SPD in 1986 . From 1990 to 1997 she was active as chairperson or deputy chairperson of the Jusos in the Braunschweig sub-district. Since 1997 she has been a member of the board of directors of the SPD sub-district Braunschweig and was sub-district chairwoman from 2002 to 2011. Since 2008 she has been a member of the state executive committee of the SPD Lower Saxony .

On February 22, 2000, Reimann succeeded Ernst Schwanhold in the Bundestag , who resigned his parliamentary mandate after 9 years and became Minister for Economy and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Technology and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . After obtaining this mandate through the Lower Saxony state list , she always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Braunschweig constituency in the subsequent federal elections. From November 2005 to November 2009 she was the spokesperson for the parliamentary group Health and then from November 2009 to December 2013 she was chairwoman of the Bundestag Committee on Health. From 2013 to 2017 she was one of the nine deputy chairmen of the SPD parliamentary group and in this function was responsible for the areas of work and social affairs, family, senior citizens, women and youth. She was also a member of the board of the SPD state group Lower Saxony / Bremen. Within the parliamentary group, she belonged to the reform-oriented Berlin network .

In March 2011 Reimann was briefly interviewed by Olaf Scholz for the office of Senator for Health and Consumer Protection in the Hamburg Senate , but then withdrew her readiness for the office. In November 2017 she was appointed Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Equality of Lower Saxony. For this reason she resigned her seat in the Bundestag; Marja-Liisa Völlers moved up for her .
