Hermann Schnipkoweit

Hermann Schnipkoweit (born August 31, 1928 in Groß Giesen ; † April 8, 2018 in Borsum ) was a German politician ( CDU ). He was a member of the state parliament of Lower Saxony and from 1976 to 1990 Lower Saxony's social minister .

Life and work

Schnipkoweit was born the son of a farm laborer . After visiting the elementary school and the attainment of the intermediate certificate 1945, he completed his training as miners and worked from 1948 to 1974 as a miner in a potash and salt mine in Giesen. He joined IG Bergbau in 1945 and was a member of the works council from 1952 to 1972. In 1954/55 he continued his education at the Academy of Work . Schnipkoweit joined the CDU in 1954, had been chairman of the CDU district association Hildesheim-Marienburg since 1968 and was elected deputy chairman of the CDU in Lower Saxony in the same year .

From 1956 to 1974 he was a member of the municipal council of Borsum and, after the regional reform, of Harsum until 1976 . In 1961 he was elected to the district council of the Hildesheim-Marienburg district. For seven electoral terms, from 1963 to 1990, Schnipkoweit was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament , most recently for the Sarstedt state electoral district . In the state parliament he was from 1970 to 1972 chairman of the committee for town planning and housing and from 1972 to 1976 chairman of the committee for building and housing. After the resignation of Prime Minister Alfred Kubel and the formation of a CDU sole government, Schnipkoweit was appointed Minister of Social Affairs in the government of Lower Saxony led by Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht . He held this office until July 1990, i.e. for fourteen years.

Schnipkoweit was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1973 , the Great Cross of Merit in 1979 and the Great Cross of Merit with a Star in 1983.
