history

The district was created in 1946 by merging the districts of Hildesheim and Marienburg . Ochtersum was incorporated into the then district-free city of Hildesheim on February 1, 1971 and thus left the district.

On March 1, 1974, most of the district was merged with the previously independent city of Hildesheim to form today's district of Hildesheim . The communities Bolzum , Wehmingen and Wirringen became parts of Sehnde in the district of Hanover , the communities Gleidingen , Ingeln and Oesselse parts of Laatzen , also in the district of Hanover.

The coat of arms was approved by the military government on October 10, 1946.

Blazon : “Quartered; Field 1 and 4: divided five times by red and gold, field 2: in green a silver deer head, between the poles a golden cross, field 3: in green a silver building. “The two quarters with red and gold stripes refer to the Coat of arms colors of the Hildesheim Monastery, which ruled over most of the district until 1802. Bockenem and Sarstedt were episcopal castles. The building represents the Marienburg near Hildesheim, the Hubertushirsch the forest richness of the district. A spangenhelm with the growing Hubertus deer and golden and green oak leaves as a helmet cover was awarded to the shield as the upper coat of arms.
