Ummeln is a village and district of Algermissen in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony .

history

Ummeln was first mentioned in a document in 1209. Since that time the place has belonged to the parish of Lühnde. The Gothic quarry stone chapel in the village center dates from the 14th century.

In the 13th century a knight family named themselves after the place. The Moritzstift and the Bartholomäuskloster in Hildesheim also owned real estate there in the Middle Ages .

From the second half of the 19th century until 1969 the sound industry shaped the activity of the place, then the local clay tube factory was closed and demolished. Only the chimney remained of the historic factory, which was restored in 2001. The former clay mining area behind the Vossberg was recultivated and is now used as a bathing lake (Blauer See) .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Ummeln
Blazon : " sign by a Göpel divided ; in frontthree upright silver bolts in red , behind in blue a broad golden ear , in the shield base in silver a blue hoe , crossed by a blue shovel , both with red handles. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The three silver bolts in red are reminiscent of the knight family of Ummenum or Ummeln, mentioned in the 13th and 14th centuries. They carried the same seal as the Lords of Bolzum (→ see under: Coat of arms of the place Bolzum ), an indication that these two families were connected, which had its headquarters in Bolzum and therefore had Bolzen in the family coat of arms. The Bolzumer resident in Ummeln called themselves "von Ummeln". The seal has been preserved to this day and is in the State Archives in Hanover. The front side of the municipal coat of arms was designed according to this seal. The bolts were only straightened straight up so that they fit better into the overall frame. The golden ear of wheat on the back blue page tells of Ummeln's agriculture, of the hard work and sweat and wages of the farmers. The lower silver part of the coat of arms with the red-stemmed blue pick and shovel tell of the industry of the place, of the extremely hard work in the clay pits in order to obtain raw materials for the manufacture of clay pipes.
