history

Mound of the Rautenberg Castle

Rautenberg is an old farming settlement that probably dates back to Germanic times. The von Rautenberg family of knights is named after the village , after which today's main street, the Rutenbergstraße, takes its name. The remains of Rautenberg Castle , which was almost completely destroyed in a fire in the early Middle Ages , are only preserved in the form of the “Hahnewall” called moth hill . One of the fountains located there is said to be largely original. At the bottom of this fountain some medieval weapons, mead bottles and utensils were found in the 1970s. The Lords of Rautenberg remained the landlords in Rautenberg until they went out in 1647, but lived in Hildesheim, in the Rautenbergschen Hof on the corner of Michaelisplatz and Langer Hagen, a cantilevered half-timbered building that was destroyed in the air raids on Hildesheim in 1945 . Century also at Rethmar Castle .

Rautenberg was incorporated into the municipality of Harsum on March 1, 1974 due to the regional reform in Lower Saxony .

coat of arms

The shield of the Knights of Rautenberg (Low German: Rutenberg) became the municipality's coat of arms: on a shining golden field there are two rows of diamonds in black that cross the shield, five diamonds above, three diamonds below. The coat of arms of the knights also showed a black and gold helmet cover and on the helmet a red pointed hat with a peacock feather (see sheet 182 of the coat of arms book by Johann Siebmacher published in Nuremberg in 1605, where the shield in the top row does not contain five , but only four diamonds are located). The eight diamonds in the coat of arms of the v. Rutenbergs should mean: “Eight. Rod. Swart. Or. That means: Real judgment, law and justice. "
