history

First documentary mentions

The place Clauen is mentioned for the first time on August 23, 1151 in a document from the Hildesheim Monastery. With this document, Bishop Bernhard confirmed the ownership of the Moritzstift. This settled disputes between him and the provost Burchard. The Latin document, in which Clauen is referred to as "Celeration", stipulates that the sexton of the Moritzstift is to be provided with the yield of one hoof (around 30 acres ) of arable land for lighting the church. Clauen is just one place among many others in this document that had to pay taxes to the monastery. However, it can be assumed that Clauen was mentioned in a document before 1151, since the missionary work in the diocese of Hildesheim by Ludwig the Pious began in 815. Unfortunately, two fires in the Hildesheim wooden cathedral in 1013 and 1046 destroyed all documents in the cathedral archive.

However, Clauen is certainly older than around 850 years, because excavations show that this area was already 5,000 to 2,000 BC. Was populated by farmers and ranchers. Mainly millet, barley and wheat were grown here at that time. It was not until 500 years AD that the Cheruscans (Fosen) were ousted by the Saxons who were approaching from the Elbe .

In addition, there was already a functioning community system at the time of the first documentary mention.

Origin of the place name

In the document from the year 1151, the place name is called "Celeration". “Celeration” could be derived from the Latin word “clavis” (key). In an old chronicle, “clavis” is attributed to a “key castle”. Remains of this castle, which served to protect the Hildesheim diocese, are said to have been visible on the northeast edge of the village towards the end of the 19th century.

Further interpretations of the place name:

´Claver´, Low German for clover - denotes a piece of land, ´Kliobon´ and ´Klobo´ - Low German for columns or log or gap, ´Klaue´ - reference to an earlier division into three districts: middle village on Schlütenstrasse, Alt-Clauen on the northern edge, small village on the former watering place in the southwest.

In the chronicle from 2001 the name development of Clauens is mentioned chronologically:

1151 C acceler; 1154 clowns; 1181 Hermanus sacerdos de Clowen; 1186 de Cleu; 1225 Clawen; 1230 Clowe; 1261 Klowen; 1263 Marcwardus de Clowin; 1265 Cloen; 1277 Ludolfus de Clauwen, Clawen; 1304 Ludbertus de Cloyen; 1345 Klouwen; 1387 Clawen; 1411 cloves; 1458 Claws, claws, claws; 1542 de Clauwen; 1560 Clawenn; 1561 Clauwen; 1757 claws

The place has been officially called Clauen since the end of the 19th century.

Latest time

Clauen was incorporated into the municipality of Hohenhameln on March 1, 1974.

The local coat of arms

The coat of arms of Clauen shows a yellow-gold lion on a red background, holding a cross with an elongated shaft in its paws. The Hanoverian heraldist Alfred Brecht made the design based on the weather vane placed in the old church tower.

This adorned the roof of the church until 1906 and, after it was replaced by another, was kept in the church tower by master locksmith Carl Ahrens. In a meeting on January 4, 1961, the Clauen parish council then decided to have this coat of arms designed for the community and to include it in the community's seal in future. After the formation of the unified community Hohenhameln in 1974, a uniform coat of arms was created for all the villages belonging to it. In order to preserve the memory of the Clauen coat of arms, three citizens of Clauen created wooden panels with the lion. These boards were put up on September 21, 1991 on all four access roads to the village.

Religions

The parish has been Evangelical Lutheran since 1542, as the council and citizens of Hildesheim committed themselves to Lutheran teaching on August 27 and the city of Hildesheim, as pledge holder, ensured that the Reformation was carried out in the city and office of Peine . Johannes Stenzi (1542–1548) is known to be the first Protestant pastor. The Protestant village church, picturesquely situated on a hill in the village, has a Romanesque tower and a baroque nave with contemporary picture windows. Probably the most valuable part of the church is the baroque organ from the castle church in Wolfenbüttel , which was bought in 1796, including the middle section of the gallery, for 250 thalers from a barn find. Duke August Wilhelm von Wolfenbüttel († 1731) commissioned it in 1725 from the organ builder Johann Andreas Graff (e) from Wolfenbüttel for 680 thalers, who used older parts of an organ by Gottfried Fritzsche (1621/22). In 1995 Bernhardt Edskes restored the instrument, which has a manual and an attached pedal.

politics

The mayor of the community is Lutz Erwig (SPD), the local mayor is Uwe Lauenstein (CDU).

Economy and Infrastructure

From 1912 on, the electricity company Clauen made sure that Clauen was “bright”. At the time, the price of electricity was calculated at 0.5 horsepower per light bulb. The community contributed 50 marks to the society.

The Clauener sugar factory is one of the last five sugar factories owned by the Nordzucker company and is one of the largest and most modern sugar beet processing plants in the region. This factory was built in 1869 by the Clauener Actien sugar factory , which was newly founded on March 16, 1869 , and its first beet campaign began in November of the same year. The Clauener Actien sugar factory was founded by a total of 15 citizens, three of whom came from the village of Clauen. In addition, two major service companies in the packaging industry operate in Clauen. On the one hand the company Konverdi GmbH and then the company OH! S AG project partner packaging. Both have had their headquarters in the Alte Schmiede since 1998.

Wind power

Since 2010, Clauen has had two RePower 3.4M wind turbines with a hub height of 128 meters and a rotor diameter of 104 meters.
