Location of Equord in Lower Saxony |
Equord is a district of the municipality of Hohenhameln in the Peine district in Lower Saxony , on the L 413 about halfway to Peine .
history
Equord was first mentioned in 1179. Today (2016) the place has 888 inhabitants. In the village is the Equord manor, which originally belonged to the von Saldern family. Hans Adam von Hammerstein (1571 / 79–1653) married Elisabeth von Salder zu Equord's first marriage and took over their family property. Later, his second marriage son, the Grand Vogt of Celle, Georg Christoph von Hammerstein (1624–1687), became the lord of Equord. Inspired by a trip to Italy, he began with the construction of the Church of St. Marcus as a manor chapel with a family crypt in the style of a Baroque Italian domed church. In 1710 his son, Lieutenant General Alexander von Hammerstein, completed the building. The Hammerstein family sold their property in the 20th century. In December 2016 the manor house was sold to Rolf Neumann from Lehrte, the manor land was acquired by the Rethmar estate owner Ludwig Block-Grupe.
Equord was incorporated into the municipality of Hohenhameln on March 1, 1974.
Explanation of the place name
Old names of the place are 1179 Eiquarde , 1196 Ekwarde , 1458 Equerde , 1403 Equorde , 1325 Ekquorde , 1356 Ekworde , 1500 Eqworde , 1445 Eckworde , 1571 Eickword and 1852 Equor . The development of the name shows that Ekward first became Ekword and then Equord . Equord is made up of the components "ek" for "oak" and "worth". The component “worth” belongs to Middle Low German “wurt, wort”, Old Saxon “wurdh” for “soil”, old English “wordh” for “street in front of a house”.
politics
Local mayor is Peter Goor (SPD).
Culture and sights
The St. Mark's Church in Equord is popularly called "Little St. Peter's Basilica" (about 16 times smaller). However, this only applies very generally to the Italian character of the baroque domed church. On April 1, 1949, the originally independent Gutparochie Equord was dissolved by order of the Hanover State Church Office and the area was parish into the parish of Mehrum.
