Rethmar is a district of the city of Sehnde , southeast of Hanover in Lower Saxony .

history

Place names ending in –mer and –mar are classified as quite old. It can then be assumed that the settlement was built around the year 500. Incidentally, the name is interpreted as the “Red Sea”, although the original words mari, mare used to refer to smaller lakes or ponds. Reth comes from Reet, Ried and means reed. The place name Rethmere is mentioned for the first time at the end of the 12th century in the document book of the Hildesheim Monastery . Later the forms Reythmer, Retmer and Reithmer can be found, but from the 17th century only the current spelling is used.

Rethmar belonged to the Great Free . The eight outdoor courtyards of the place can still be located today and can be traced back around 400 years. In addition, it was manor house Rethmar until 1928 an independent Gutsgemeinde who belonged to other people than Rethmarer Gutshörige. The castle is first mentioned in a document in 1332 and was originally a residential tower from the late 12th or early 13th century, which belonged to the Lords of Rautenberg . From around 1530 they added the renaissance wing, which today forms the west wing. In 1647 the estate was inherited by the zu Eltz family . Around 1710, Philipp Adam zu Eltz expanded the palace into the baroque three-wing complex that exists today.

Rethmar had two mills. They are mentioned in old registers in the 16th and 17th centuries and originally both belonged to the Rethmar family and were leased for mill interest. The so-called lower mill, at last it was only a ruin, stood in the area of today's Mühlenweg until 1967 and is now in the open-air museum in Stade. Another mill stood in front of Gretenberg. It burned down in 1977.

The street name “Salzburg” north of the B 65 comes from the fact that Protestants from Salzburg had settled in Rethmar. They were among those who were persecuted by the local archbishop for their beliefs in 1731 and finally expelled. The English King and Elector of Hanover, Georg II, had offered them admission and support, and so six families with 42 people came here, where they were offered accommodation and work. The established manors in Rethmar asserted before the court in Celle that they had to move on. The reason was the claim that they endangered the work and income of the residents here. So they were expelled a second time and moved on to Minden or Hameln.

On March 1, 1974, Rethmar was incorporated into the municipality of Sehnde (today the city of Sehnde).

The Church of Saint Catherine

In a list of goods from 1306 a Thidericus “plebanus” (clergyman) “in Rethmere” is mentioned. When the Lords of Rutenberg settled in the Rethmar castle they built in the 12th century, they built or took over a chapel or church. In 1361 they took over the patronage of the Catherine Altar. The name of the church is derived from this altar today. In addition, they also held the church patronage. The current design of the massive quarry stone building, which probably dates from the late Middle Ages, dates from the beginning of the 18th century. The Crypta Eltziana from the time of the lords of Eltz (with the magnificent coffin of Philipp Adam zu Eltz ), which was added in the 17th century, as well as several splendidly carved tombstones by those of Rautenberg from the 16th and 17th centuries in the interior of the church characterize the building, which houses the The manor house and the rectory, which dates back to the 18th century, form an impressive ensemble.

Population development

The registers of the Amtsvogtei Ilten record separately the "Rauttenberg people" or "Junckern-Leuthe" and the "Freyen-Leuthe". Rethmar was in a sense divided. The “Junckern people” belonged to the knight's seat with its extensive estate, in 1640 a total of 30 farms, including 1 “Ackerman” and 29 “Kottsassen”. In 1660 29 estate owners are listed, including “the master manager”, in 1680 there were 34. Most of them were minor Kothöfe, some were also Meierhöfe, but also belonged to the estate. In addition, there are 8 free courtyards, the "Freyen-Leuthe", which have remained the same for centuries. From 1880 to 1915 the building tax roll recorded a total of 95 house numbers. The population could have been around 190 in the 17th century. In the 18th century the number of farms had increased only slightly. So there will be little more than 200 inhabitants. Relatively reliable population figures for Rethmar are only available at the beginning of the 19th century:

Year - residents Year - residents
1811-492 1885-609
1821-537 1905-681
1823-464 1925-882
1848-613 1939-852
1871-515 1946-1538

The population rose gradually over the years until it almost doubled at the end of the Second World War until 1950 due to the influx of refugees and bombed-out people. As everywhere, the numbers then slowly decreased again, but nevertheless remained at a very high level:

Year - residents Year - residents
1950 - 1663 1975-1314
1955-1528 1980-1211
1960-1415 1985-1273
1965-1296 1990-1278
1970 - 1274 1993 - 1258

The manor house Rethmar and later the test center of the Federal Plant Variety Office, which were important as employers, probably contributed to this. The manor operated intensive agriculture and animal husbandry, the Federal Plant Variety Office carried out extensive experimental cultivation of new plants. The location of the Bundessortenamt in Rethmar existed until the end of 2015. The proximity to the Friedrichshall potash plant in Sehnde (from 1900) and the construction of the Mittelland Canal (1919–1928) also played a role. Most of the jobs in the areas mentioned have since disappeared, so that many commuters now live in Rethmar. The town has expanded in recent years through several new development areas and has become even more attractive thanks to a golf course and lively sports and other club activities. In March 2009 Rethmar had 1730 inhabitants. This makes it the fourth largest among the 15 districts of the city of Sehnde.

Sports

The largest sports club in town is the MTV Rethmar v. 1900 eV, which has its home in the Canal Stadium. The facility has two grass pitches on which the club's home games are played. The team plays in the season 2016/2017 in the district league Hannover-Land, season 1. The team was taken over in 2011 by a former state league player and "son of the village" as player-coach. In the first season he was promoted from the 2nd district class to the 1st district class straight away. In the following season 2012/2013 the story was continued and the new promotion succeeded, now in the district league. In the 2013/2014 season, the club played for relegation to promotion to the district league until the last match day , but failed due to the poorer goal difference. In the following two years they established themselves in the district league and occupied places in the secured midfield. After the departure of the coach and the associated upheaval in 2016, the club found itself in troubled waters and played throughout the 2016/2017 season against relegation, which could only be prevented on the last match day.

In addition to a women's team ( syndicate with TSV Haimar-Dolgen), the club has a youth division from G to A youth.

There is also a tennis facility with three clay courts on the complex.

Beyond the Mittelland Canal, there is a spacious golf course, the Rethmar Golflinks.
