history

The oldest surviving document that mentions Wehmingen is from 1240.

Many citizens were damaged in fires in Bolzum and Wehmingen in the summer of 1857 . About half of all buildings were affected. In the press organ Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung and Anzeiger on Tuesday, August 25, 1857, the message read:

“Yesterday afternoon at 3½ o'clock the northern horizon of the city was covered with thick clouds of smoke and it was concluded that there was a strong fire in the area of Algermissen. Today we receive the sad news through an eyewitness that the fire raged in Bolzum and Wehmingen, Amt Ruthe and consumed 14 courtyards and synagogues in the first village , while the latter cremated up to about a third. The fire started in Bolzum, allegedly by children who played with matches, and was played over by flung sides of bacon after Wehmingen, which was barely a quarter of an hour away. "

A collection was carried out in Sarstedt for the victims . The collection brought in an amount of 250 thalers, half of which were given to the communities.

On March 1, 1974, the municipality of Wehmingen , which belongs to the Hildesheim-Marienburg district, was incorporated into the municipality, now the town of Sehnde.

Economy and Infrastructure

Wehmingen water tower

Potash mining was the most important branch of industry for many decades. The first potash mine was sunk from 1896 in Hohenfels, which today belongs to Wehmingen, and mining began in 1902. Although the production here was shut down as early as 1927, in the core town of Sehnde and in the Ilten district , potash was mined for fertilizer and road salt production until the 1990s. An affiliated fertilizer and road salt factory is still in operation. Wehmingen has a bus stop in the direction of Sehnde and a bus stop in the direction of Bemerode.
