The Hohenfels potash mine was in operation from 1901 to 1928, then it was shut down, but the shaft remained operational until 1983. From 1937 the site served as the Sehnde ammunition plant , which used forced laborers who were housed in the affiliated labor camp. After the Second World War , the site was used by the British Army until 1966, then as a Bundeswehr base until 1973 .

Tram Museum

When setting up the museum, the sponsoring association, which was founded in 1987, used a vehicle collection that had already been started in the 1970s by its predecessor association, Deutsches Straßenbahn-Museum Hannover e. V. back. Originally there were more than 350 trams, buses , trolleybuses and commercial vehicles . By 2016, the stock had been reduced to around 140 rail vehicles . Many vehicles were given to other museums, transport companies and private collections. But many vehicles were also scrapped. This was necessary because many vehicles were in poor condition due to outdoor parking times of sometimes more than thirty years. There were also a number of duplicates. Around 70 vehicles were exhibited in mid-2016. Of these cars, 17 railcars and nine sidecars are ready for operation and approved for passenger transport . There are also some work cars ready for use. For the operation and maintenance of the vehicles as well as the restoration of other wagons, the museum has an extensive spare parts store at its disposal, with most of the parts coming from the scrapped wagons.

Despite the large collection, which, in addition to the railways, also consisted of some trolleybuses, several diesel omnibuses and the commercial vehicles required to maintain operations, such as B. Tower car exists, new historic vehicles are also procured if they fill a gap in the collection, replace a similar vehicle that is in poor condition or can be used for driving.

A major problem for the museum is the lack of protected parking spaces for the exhibits, which quickly suffer significant signs of weathering and damage in the open air. At the beginning of 2006, a steel lightweight construction hall open to the side was built as a carport . There are around 95 vehicles under the roof.

business

For the most part, the old tracks of the former mine are used by the museum in standard gauge (1435 mm). The tracks were extended by new sections. Most recently, the first section of the new turning loop was opened in 2004 , which connects the old Kalibahn tracks with a curve, and in 2005 the gap in the overhead line was completed so that the first loop was completed. The second, for the operation of mover carriage necessary turning loop was completed in late 2014 and opened in summer 2015 with two new arrival stops for passenger service.

Part of the former connection to Algermissen station on the Lehrte – Nordstemmen line is also included in the route network . A first section of approx. 1.1 km in length has been electrified since August 11, 2013. A short extension has been used since April 2015. The final end point will be at the bridge over the Hildesheim branch canal . The construction of the overhead contact line for the next section began in May 2016, the track structure on this section was completely renewed beforehand.

Vehicle collection

The vehicle collection focuses on German trams from all eras . It is supplemented by a number of foreign exhibits, work vehicles and related vehicles, including horse-drawn trams , a carriage from the Wuppertal suspension railway and a restored example of the first series of the Budapest subway , the second-oldest subway in the world after the London Underground . From 2016 to 2018 the Hanoverian railcar 227 and the sidecar 1072 were restored to working condition by the members of the association

2019 is being processed:

  • Railcar 5103 (Rheinbahn) - Uerdingen 1955 (Düwag)
