Bilm is a district of the city of Sehnde , southeast of Hanover .

history

There were human settlements in the region even in the early days. Bronze Age barrows can be found south of Bilm from around 2200 to 800 BC. In the Middle Ages , Bilm belonged to the Great Free .

In the years 1233–1246 a Bartoldi de Billenhem appears in Hildesheim documents. Bilm is therefore the seat of the family of the same name at the beginning of the 13th century. Until the 14th century, the bearers of the name were mainly ministerials in the service of the Bishop of Hildesheim and had the suffix “de” or “von” as an indication of their place of residence. In the 15th century the family is considered to be extinct. Citizens with the name Billems, Bilms and Bilhems without the title “von und zu” existed in Bilm until at least 1752.

The place Bilm already existed in 1233. There is a document from 1359, according to which 1½ hooves "uppe deme velde to Billum" (on the field at Bilm) are left to the bishop of Hildesheim.

After the first name "Billenhem", later spellings of the place name are: 1252 - Bilnem, 1325 - Billem, 1359 Billum and from the end of the 17th century only Bilm. It can be assumed that the name form "Billenhem" goes back to the name Bilo or Billo, which occurs in the Saxon area. The syllable "-hem" means something like "home, settlement, place".

Accordingly, the place Bilm is originally the residence of Billo and 1233 the year of the first mention. It is located in the area of the Great Free, so named since the 13th century.

Mills

There have been five windmills in the Bilm area over the centuries. The location of the place on a hill to the north should have been favorable for this. The Boedecker family, mentioned in 1667, worked as mill entrepreneurs until the beginning of the 20th century. The oldest - probably a post mill - is said to have burned down in the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). It belonged to the owner of the Ahlten estate. Another post mill was mentioned as early as 1676. It belonged to the miller Ehrhard Boedecker.

Another post mill had belonged to Jasper Engelcke since 1661, who had bought it from a miller's widow Boedecker in Aligse. When Müller Boedecker from Bilm married into the Engelcke family around 1750, he now owned both Bilm mills.

Former windmill on the Mühlenberg

In 1784 the landowner Schlemm from Ahlten had a post mill built against the resistance of the Ilten office and the miller Boedecker as a replacement for the mill that was burned in the Thirty Years War. After Boedecker won a lawsuit led by it, he finally bought Schlemm's mill and broke down his old mill.

On the Bilmer Muhlenberg stood until the mid-19th century, a post mill , which burned down. Then the master miller Erhard Bödecker from Bilm had a gallery dutchman built in their place for 2030 thalers by the Hildesheim mill builder Propfe. With its steel mill for grinding , it was the most modern mill in the Burgdorf district . A storm on February 10, 1925 caused the mill blades to rotate so strongly that sparks from the rolling mill set the mill on fire. It was restored and burned down in the same way during a similar event on November 24, 1928. Around 1930 the mill with the remaining base masonry was converted for residential purposes.

Population development

In the registers of the Amtsvogtei Ilten, Bilm 1535/36 is recorded with 33 farm positions, in 1667 45 are given. In the Kurhannoversche Landesaufnahme from 1781 there are 51 fireplaces. In each case, the number of residents is not given, but the number of courtyards, landlords and fireplaces. With an average of 6 people per farm, around 200 inhabitants are to be assumed for the years 1535/36, around 270 in 1667 and around 300 in 1781.

Population:

  • 1784-347
  • 1821-390
  • 1848-404
  • 1871-496
  • 1885-459
  • 1905-471
  • 1925-472
  • 1939-478

After the Second World War , the population almost doubled to 917 residents in 1953 due to displaced persons . After that, it declined to 661 residents in 1965. In the following period, the population gradually rose again to 811 in 1974 and fell to 708 in Year 1986.

In the history of its development, Bilm has always been an agricultural place. This also included windmills. In the second half of the 20th century, however, the place increasingly developed as a place to live (and sleep) in the Hanover area and in the vicinity of Höver. The cement industry located there influences local life and housing, but has not been able to trigger a strong development boost here. Housing development has been rather restrained. For this, the infrastructure, especially the road expansion, was well developed before the regional reform. Among the local clubs is an ice sports club, which has existed since 1976, which specializes in ice stock sport - mostly on a summer track.

religion

Bilm was the seat of an Evangelical Lutheran chapel congregation, which was closed on February 1, 2012. The legal successor was the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Ilten.

politics

Local mayor is Bernd Ostermeyer ( CDU ). In the current legislative period, five members of the CDU and two of the SPD are elected to the seven-member local council. Furthermore, Bilm is currently providing 3 councilors to the city of Sehnde.

coat of arms

Today's coat of arms shows in the upper part a blue-armored golden lion with a blue tongue on a red background, corresponding to the free coat of arms. Below that, on a green background, is a golden right-angled bar with three red hearts. The lower part is traced back to the coat of arms of the von Bilm family.

Culture and sights

  • The chapel church dates back to 1616. It is a hall building made of rubble stones with an area of 12.5 × 7.35 m. The roof is relatively steep, with a roof turret sitting over the western gable . Inside is a simple plastered beam ceiling. Church accounts from 1569 show that there was a previous building. This is also indicated by the bell, dated 1578. The Evangelical Lutheran chapel community that emerged after the Reformation was abolished in 2012. Legal successor is the parish of Ilten.
  • The windmill on Bilmer Mühlenberg, which burned down and rebuilt several times, was last rebuilt around 1930 with the remaining base masonry for residential purposes.
