The wide-body Hannover ( GVH ) is a tariff and traffic group for the public transport in the Hanover region . After the Hamburg transport association, it is the second oldest transport association in Germany .

“The operation of local transport in the greater Hanover area costs around 380 million euros annually. 60 percent of the total costs are covered by ticket sales (226 million euros), the rest is shared by federal, state and regional governments. In addition, there are expenses for the expansion and maintenance of the infrastructure. "

history

Development of passenger numbers in the GVH since 1996

The GVH was founded on March 4, 1970 after a protest action (for details see: Rote-Punkt-Aktion ). At that time, after a fare increase of ten pfennigs , protests took place, which led to the fact that from June 12 to 19, 1969, no more trams and city buses ran. Only when city and Üstra unit fare of 50 cent per ride and the municipalization of ÜSTRA (previously majority owned by Prussia Elektra was) promised heard blockades and demonstrations. The ÜSTRA resumed traffic on June 20, 1969. The new uniform tariff of the GVH came into force on March 16, 1970.

When it was founded, the GVH included the transport company ÜSTRA, Deutsche Bundesbahn with its local trains and buses , the Deutsche Bundespost with its post buses , the Steinhuder Meer-Bahn and the Bachstein transport company from Burgdorf . From 1974 onwards, rail buses and post buses were combined in the Regional Verkehr Hannover GmbH (RVH) under private law .

From 2002 to 2012 the GVH was run as a civil law partnership (GbR) with the transport companies üstra and RegioBus Hannover . From January 1, 2013, the GVH took on the legal form of a GmbH - at that time with the participating companies üstra, DB Regio, RegioBus, metronom and erixx as well as the Hanover region , which holds 51% of the shares. The Westfalenbahn has also been part of the association since December 2015 .

The tariff of the Greater Hanover Transport initially included the local public transport of the state capital Hanover and the former districts of Hanover, Burgdorf, Neustadt am Rübenberge and Springe - today the entire region of Hanover. In 1974, as part of the regional reform, the boundaries of the tariff area were expanded and brought into line with the new region.

The tariff area also includes some lines outside of today's Hanover region, such as the tram line 1 and the regional trains to Sarstedt (Hildesheim district) as well as some bus lines that extend into the Celle, Peine, Hildesheim, Schaumburg and Hameln-Pyrmont districts.

The standard tariff was later replaced by a tiered zone tariff. Initially, this tariff consisted of two price levels and three tariff zones. Price level 1 was valid for trips within a tariff zone or to the neighboring zone, for example from tariff zone 1 to zone 2 or from 2 to 3 with one hour transfer authorization. Price level 2 applies to journeys within all three tariff zones with a two-hour transfer authorization.

In April 2019, the GVH regional tariff was extended to include the districts of Nienburg / Weser and Schaumburg.

Traffic Company

The following transport companies belong to the GVH :

The Hanover region acts as the responsible authority for local public transport .

The transport companies operate twelve light rail lines (plus two event lines), seven S-Bahn lines (plus one exhibition line), eight regional train lines and around 150 bus lines in the tariff area . Over 1900 stops are served and around 190 million passengers are carried every year. Call taxis and buses complete the offer in times and areas with little traffic .

Rates

The tariff area is divided into three tariff zones. Zone A (until 2019 Hanover ) comprises, apart from a few roundings, the city of Hanover, Zone B (until 2019 surrounding area ) surrounds this innermost zone in a ring, which in turn is enclosed by Zone C (until 2019 region ). Anyone who crosses a tariff zone border must have a ticket for the next higher price level. A zone-independent short-haul ticket is also offered. It applies to journeys up to three (city rail) or five stations (bus), but not for the S-Bahn and other regional trains.

In the meantime, certain railway stations in the surrounding districts (outer ring - AR1 to AR3) have been integrated into the GVH tariff through regional tariffs (R1 to R3) for season tickets (cards): in the district of Schaumburg, district of Celle, district of Peine, district of Nienburg, district of Hameln-Pyrmont, District Hildesheim and District Gifhorn as well as in the communities Schwarmstedt and Walsrode from the district Heidekreis (as of January 2010). The regional cards are valid for all buses and trains within the GVH area and from there to the DB train stations in the outer ring, but not for buses in the outer ring (i.e. within other transport associations). There are discounted connecting tickets for this in some districts.

The tariff system was reformed on January 1, 2020. “Tickets” and “Cards” became “cards” with uniform zones A, B and C. Previously, the Hanover zone (now Zone A) was divided into two smaller zones Hanover 1 and 2 only for season tickets except day tickets.
