The ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe Aktiengesellschaft is a public transport company in Hannover . It operates the Hanover Stadtbahn and the city bus network in Hanover and surrounding cities and communities. A subsidiary is responsible for Maschsee shipping. The üstra is a partner in the transport association Großraum-Verkehr Hannover (GVH).
history
prehistory
The forerunner of the ÜSTRA was a horse-drawn bus line from the Black Bear to the main train station set up in 1852 by the Hanoverian rental coachman Heinrich Battermann and two of his colleagues . After further lines had been set up, the "Erste Hannoversche Omnibus Companie" was founded. It was taken over in 1894 by Tram Hannover AG, which had been founded two years earlier . The operation of horse-drawn buses ceased in 1918.
Following a contract with the city of Hanover, the Continental Horse Railroad Corporation , based in Berlin, initially opened four horse-drawn railway lines in Hanover in 1872 . As a result of advancing industrialization, the increase in population, increased housing construction and the expansion of the Hanover city area through several incorporations, the route network was expanded rapidly in the following years. Other operators were also involved in expanding the network, including “The Tramway Company of Germany Ltd.”, which took over the “Continentalen” routes in 1879.
Tram Hannover AG
In 1892, the population of Hanover had grown to around 185,000 people who could use a rail network with seven lines over a total of 39.7 kilometers. The passenger volume at that time was 9.6 million people. Now the Hanoverian magistrate was striving for an overall plan for the rail network and in 1892 initiated the establishment of the Hanover tram company . In the same year the architect and district chairman Theodor Krüger was appointed sole director of the company. Under Krüger, the other providers were taken over by the Hanover tram company until 1897 .
ÜSTRA
In 1921 the tramway Hannover AG was renamed to Überlandwerke und Straßenbahnen Hannover AG , abbreviated ÜSTRA . In addition to operating trams and later buses, the company was also an electricity supplier in the Hanover region - without being in the city itself . This division was transferred to the newly founded Hastra on January 1, 1929 .
During the Nazi era , ÜSTRA employed forced laborers from 1938 and during the Second World War . Between 1937 and 1958 the company operated the Hanover trolleybus .
From 1960 the company traded as Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe (Üstra) AG , since 1980 as ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG . In 1970 the company was due to the action red dot , the year before from the Preussen Elektra spun Corporation and kommunalisiert . It was combined with the municipal utilities in the holding company Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft Hannover , which today holds 98.38% of the ownership shares in Üstra.
In 2001, the rail network and the tunnel and station systems of the Hanover city railway became the property of the Hanover Region Infrastructure Company. Between 2004 and 2006, all local transport services were brought together under the roof of intalliance AG . 1900 employees switched from Üstra to intalliance AG . Since January 1, 2007, the operation has been in sole hands again.
vehicles
Light rail car
Üstra still has 87 of the original 260 TW 6000 light rail vehicles in stock. There are also 143 units of the TW 2000 type, which was purchased in 1998 . Since 2015, after more than 30 years of service life, the remaining TW 6000 have been gradually being replaced by a new third generation light rail vehicle ( TW 3000 ); in November 2018 this was 100 vehicles. All 153 trams of this type ordered are to be used in Hanover by 2020.
buses
131 buses are used on the bus routes operated by ÜSTRA AG (see local transport in Hanover ) . There are also other vehicles from the subsidiary üstra Reisen and the subcontractors Dau Bus , Block, Hartmann Bus-Betrieb and Grund. The Mercedes-Benz Citaro with a special design designed by British designer James Irvine for üstra and purchased from 1999 onwards are no longer part of the inventory . This was available in four versions: as a diesel or natural gas vehicle , each in a 12 m solo and 18 m articulated version. The vehicle fleet consists of 53 Solaris Urbino 12 , nine Solaris Urbino 12 Hybrid , three Solaris Urbino 12 electric , 27 Solaris Urbino 18 articulated buses with hybrid drive , 26 MAN Lion's City Hybrid Solo , 39 MAN Lion's City 18-m articulated buses and 4 Mercedes-Benz E-Citaro .
In July 2008, a Solaris Urbino 18 hybrid bus was purchased and used on various lines. It is powered by two electric motors and a diesel engine. This drive technology saves up to around 23 percent fuel compared to diesel buses; The bus is also particularly quiet and its drive works smoothly. Funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport helped cover the cost of ten more hybrid buses, which is almost 1.2 million euros higher than that of diesel buses. Since September 2011, a further 26 Solaris Urbino 18 Hybrids have been gradually purchased, which are used in the entire route network of üstra. Particular attention is paid to line 121, which is served exclusively by hybrid vehicles. In 2015, the fleet was supplemented by 26 MAN Lion's City Hybrids , so that in 2017 there are a total of 62 hybrid buses. At the beginning of 2016, üstra purchased three fully electric solo buses of the type Solaris Urbino 12 electric . The buses run in test operation on the ring lines 100 and 200 and are charged in a few minutes via an external charging station at the final stop at August-Holweg-Platz. The first four Mercedes-Benz E-Citaro vehicles arrived at Üstra on January 14, 2020 .
Ships
On the Maschsee , the subsidiary company üstra Reisen operates scheduled and charter services with its ships from Good Friday until October 31st . The fleet consists of the electrically powered ships "Hannover", "Niedersachsen", "Deutschland" and the solar catamaran "Europa". Separate fares apply. Every year (as of 2012) around 60,000 passengers are carried in regular services.
