James Irvine (Designer)

James Irvine (born December 1958 in London , † February 18, 2013 in Milan ) was a British designer .

After school, Irvine attended the Kingston Polytechnic Design School until 1981 and then the Royal College of Art . After graduating in 1984, he went to Milan to work under Ettore Sottsass in Olivetti's design department. 1987 followed a one year work stay in Japan at Toshiba .

Upon his return, Irvine founded his own design studio in Milan and was also a partner at Sottsass Associati from 1993 to 1997. In addition to his own design work, Irvine also taught in Karlsruhe , London and Milan.

Irvine designed a wide variety of things from sofas and lights to garlic presses and bus shelters. He became very well known in Germany in 1999 with the design of a Mercedes-Benz Citaro city ​​bus for the Hanover local transport company üstra for Expo 2000 . His customers included companies such as Thonet , B&B Italia , Zumtobel , WMF , Ikea and Muji .
