history

Already in the middle of the 16th century there was a water distribution in Hanover via a well system and water pipes, which could be maintained for over 300 years by means of constant extensions and maintenance. In 1875, however, the magistrate made the decision to build a groundwater works in Ricklingen . Hanover's population of more than 100,000 made this decision necessary because the simple wells could no longer meet the city's water needs.

In 1878 the new plant in Ricklingen started operations. However, it was not the first major energy supplier from which the city of Hanover profited: as early as 1825, a contract had been signed with the London Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA), which entrusted the British company with the task of operating the old, still operated with tallow Replacing street lamps with new gas lamps, operating and maintaining them. For this purpose, the Glocksee gasworks was built in the same year the contract was signed.

In 1883, the Ricklingen waterworks and the Glocksee gasworks were followed by a block system for generating electrical energy . In 1891, the first power station in Osterstrasse went online. In 1922, all the individual plants were combined to form a single management company: the municipal depots.

The post-war period was marked by reconstruction measures and the economic miracle , from which the municipal depots also benefited. New systems were set up and the expansion of the networks in previously undeveloped areas promoted. From 1952 the utility company was officially called Städtische Betriebswerke .

After the economic miracle of the post-war period and in particular the upswing of the late 1960s, the Stadtwerke (until the end of 1952: Städtische Betriebswerke ) had achieved double-digit growth rates, the City Council of Hanover decided in November 1970 to convert the supply facilities into a stock corporation ; The state capital Hanover became the sole shareholder of Stadtwerke Hannover AG on December 21, 1970. The conversion of the Stadtwerke into a stock corporation was necessary in order to be able to combine Stadtwerke and Üstra in the Holding Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft Hannover mbH (VVG).

The production of natural gas began in the early 1970s, in 1982 the first cavern storage facility in Empelde went into operation, and in 1989 the joint power plant in Hanover in Stöcken began to operate .

The head office has been located in the Ihme-Zentrum in the Hanover district of Linden-Mitte since 1975 .

On April 8, 2011, the enercity hardship fund eV was founded with the support of the state capital Hanover . The association aims to help avoid social hardship in the event of electricity, gas and water closures. The association is endowed with 150,000 € annually. It is the result of a long-term consultation process with societal and official actors from the social sector.
