The Linden thermal power station is a natural gas -fired thermal power station in Hanover in the Linden-Nord district , which is operated by enercity (formerly Stadtwerke Hanover). It has three power plant blocks with a net output of 255 MW electrical plus 185 MW thermal for district heating .
Because of its three boiler houses with the 125 m high chimneys , the plant is popularly called Three Warm Brothers .
history
In 1959, the city of Hanover decided to build a power plant that had become necessary to supply electricity and district heating . Various problems arose when choosing a location. The plant was to be centrally located in the city, which means that a location in a built-up area could not be avoided. Only one location on the river was possible because of the domestic water withdrawal. There were two factories on the Ihme site in question , which had been destroyed in the air raids on Hanover in World War II. These were an ultramarine factory founded in 1856 and an asphalt factory from 1871. Their remains had to be cleaned up by building a power station. On the part of the city, additional requirements were formulated that the power plant did not emit any noise and that the green zone along the Ihme could not be narrowed. The power plant went online in August 1962. In 1975 the chimneys were increased from 65 m to 125 m due to the construction of the nearby Ihme Center .
In the 1980s, the power plant was retrofitted with a flue gas denitrification system to reduce pollutant emissions.
The middle of the three power plant blocks was shut down in 2003 for economic reasons. In 2004, individual theater performances took place in the 40 m high and gutted boiler house.
On June 9, 2013, Stadtwerke Hannover AG organized the “Family Festival” day of the open power plant , which thousands of visitors used to tour the technical facilities.

Architecturally, the power plant was executed in steel construction with yellow brick infills. The boiler houses received gray polycolor glazing in an aluminum grid.
When it was built, the power plant received three identical power plant blocks, each with a maximum heating capacity of 55 MW. The district heating generated was used to heat around 20,000 apartments in the early years. The power plant works on the principle of combined heat and power and, in addition to generating electricity, represents the starting point for Hanover’s 280 km long district heating network for 35,000 customers (as of 2007).
Initially, hard coal dust was fired with heating oil and from 1972 also with natural gas. The hard coal required as primary energy was obtained by rail from the port of Linden until 1990 . From the loading terminal in Fössestrasse, it reached the power plant on underground conveyor belts. Sporadically, oil was also burned, which was delivered via the connection Mittellandkanal - Leine - Ihme. In 1990 the power plant was completely converted to natural gas firing.
After the gutting and modernization of a block was completed, the power plant was converted into a combined cycle plant in 1998 by adding a gas turbine (type Siemens V64.3A ) . One of the old boilers was replaced by a waste heat boiler ; At times one of the chimneys was dismantled and later replaced by one with a larger diameter. The steam turbine remained unchanged.
In a further modernization, a second gas turbine (type GE 6FA + e ) was retrofitted and a second boiler was converted into a waste heat boiler, and this time the steam turbine was also replaced by a more powerful one. After completing this conversion, the nominal electrical output increased to 230 MW and the nominal thermal output to 180 MW. The new plant went into operation at the beginning of January 2013. Stadtwerke Hannover invested a total of 155 million euros.
For the commissioning of the new system in January 2013, the facade of the three towers was illuminated in red for four nights. The lighting can now be seen in the colors of the Stadtwerke and every evening.
