The Mehrum power plant is a German hard coal power plant . It is located on the Mittelland Canal in Mehrum in the Hohenhameln municipality , Peine district .
The power plant has a net output of 690 megawatts (gross output: 750 MW). Block 3, which is still in operation today, was completed in 1979. The net electrical efficiency is 40.5%. The power plant feeds the energy it produces into the TenneT TSO transmission network . The power plant employs 110 people (as of 2018).
The chimney of the power plant is 250 meters high. The coal is delivered via the port of Mehrum on the nearby Mittelland Canal.
The incineration produces 2.5 million m³ of flue gas and 24 tons of fly ash per hour. In addition to hard coal, 144 tons of sewage sludge were burned per day in this plant until 2014.
In 2009 E.ON sold its 50% stake in the power plant to Stadtwerke Hannover due to conditions imposed by the European Commission . As a result, Kraftwerk Mehrum GmbH had the two shareholders from 2009 to 2017
- Stadtwerke Hannover AG (83.3% share) and
- Braunschweiger Versorgungs-AG & Co. KG (16.7% share).
In 2017 it became known that Stadtwerke Hannover had sold its shares in the power plant to the Czech holding company EPH . The reason was the power plant's lack of profitability. According to media reports, it loses around 10 to 15 million euros per year. In the same year, Braunschweiger Versorgungs-AG also sold its shares to EPH, so that EPH is now the sole owner of the power plant. According to the operator, the power plant should remain on the grid until at least 2021.
