Leonard Johann Heinrich Körting (also: Leonhard Körting , born June 13, 1834 in Hanover ; † July 9, 1930 ) was a German technician , gas specialist , director of the gasworks in Hanover and a freemason .

Körting was the eldest son of the first director of the Hanoverian gas works , at the time still the Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA), the businessman Friedrich Ernst Körting (1803-1882) and his wife Sophie (1802-1869), daughter of the Hanoverian court furniture maker Johann Heinrich Meyer and Catharine Sophie Amalie Corneils , born. Leonhard was the older brother of Ernst Körting and Berthold Körting , who later founded the Körting Brothers company in Hanover .

Körting attended the Polytechnic School in Hanover and worked for the Hanoverian gas works since 1855. From 1878 until his retirement in 1908, Körting followed his father as director of the ICGA.

From 1872 to 1874 he was chairman of the Association for Freihandschießen Hannover from 1862 eV 1886 to 1922 he was chairman of the gymnastics club in Hannover . Körting was the grandfather of a school friend and patron of the DADA artist Kurt Schwitters , with whom Körting went on a trip to Lake Garda in 1912, for example . Körting was a Freemason. In 1873 he moved from the Grand Lodge to the Grand Lodge of Prussia . He was a member of the Hanoverian Lodge Zum Schwarzen Bär and from 1893 to 1923 its chairman . From 1898 to 1900 and 1900 to 1903, Körting was chairman of the German Association of Gas and Gas. Water professionals . In 1905 Leonhard Körting received the Bunsen-Pettenkofer Honor Roll from the German Association of Gas and Water Experts.

In 1861 Körting married his fiancée Maria Henriette Charlotte Mertens (1834–1920), and four children arose from the marriage:

  • Ernst Körting (1862–1945), later General Director of the Berlin Gas Works
  • Emilie, married Galley (1863–1934)
  • Dipl.-Ing. Johannes Ernst Berthold Körting (1868–1906), who worked in Moscow from 1900, where he also died.
    • His daughter Dr. med. Wera Gißel had been the wife of Senior Field Physician Prof. Dr. med. habil. Heinrich Gißel .
  • Alfred Adolf Conrad Carl Körting (1873–1954)

Honors and portraits

  • The Grand Lodge of Prussia has been awarding the Körting Medal since 1898, created by the sculptor Werner Hantelmann , with a bust of Leonard Körting on the front
  • In 1925 the sculptor Werner Hantelmann created a bronze medal with the inscription “For the 70th anniversary of bricklaying in 1925” around a bear standing on a pillar, the reference to the Black Bear Lodge . The medal with a diameter of 38.2 mm shows on the other side a bust of the chair master of the lodge with the name spelling “Leonard Körting”.
  • There is a 285 × 282 mm cast bronze plate with a similar, but more concise, modulated bust between three columns with different capitals, as well as - at the forehead level - the letters "AET S XCVI", undated, but again subtitled with the name spelling "Leonard Körting"
