Swinging Hanover

Swinging Hannover , officially enercity swinging hannover since 2005 , is a two-day international jazz festival and has been taking place once a year in Hannover since 1967 .

history

The festival is organized by the Hanover Jazz Club , whose founder Michael Gehrke brought the festival to life in 1967. The festival began as an open air concert on Opernplatz. In 1969 the jazz band ball was added in initially changing institutions. It was not until 1971 that the open-air concert moved to Trammplatz. Today the jazz bandball is called Jazz Night and takes place regularly on the evening before Ascension Day in the dome hall of the Hanover Congress Center and the open-air concert on Trammplatz in front of the New Town Hall on Ascension Day morning. There are five or six selected bands each year.

Numerous international and national stars of the scene played at the festival. Swinging Hannover a. a. through the numerous so-called "all-star casts" that were introduced from the end of the 1990s under the name "Swinging Hannover All Stars". These "all-star casts" included a. Music greats like Sweets Edison , Red Holloway , Houston Person , Jimmy Woode , Keith Copeland , Etta Jones , Benny Bailey , Keith Smith , Rod Mason , Colin T. Dawson , Jerry Tilitz , Joe Wulf , Peter Müller , Andy McGhee , Charly Höllering , Thilo Wagner , Hal Singer , Abraham Burton , Dick de Graaf , Romano Mussolini , Benny Golson , Oscar Klein , Doug Weiss , Eli Degibri , Aaron Goldberg , Dusko Goykovich and Olaf Polziehn .

World-famous drummers competed against each other in the so-called “Drum Battles”, for example Al Foster , Pete York , Bobby Durham , Huub Janssen , Gregor Beck and Charly Antolini .

The other music guests at Swinging Hannover included a. The open-air concert on Ascension Day was recorded by NDR television until 2000 . With around 40,000 visitors (in the last two years) it describes itself as Germany's largest open-air jazz festival.

The name of the festival has been changed by its sponsor since 2005, Stadtwerke Hannover .
