Phil Mason (born April 10, 1940 in Kentish Town , North London , † June 9, 2014 ) was a British trumpeter and founder of the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival .

Mason grew up in Norfolk and Muswell Hill. At 16 he first worked as a gravedigger before moving to Ireland in 1960 to study Modern Languages ​​at Trinity College . In Dublin he played in various jazz groups with Richie McGowan, Barry Richardson and Martin Bennett. After his return to England he played in Max Collie's Rhythm Aces from 1970 . In the 1980s he set up a traditional jazz festival in his home town, the Isle of Bute , at which Acker Bilk , Kenny Ball , Chris Barber and the Temperance Seven performed in the following years ; In 1992 he formed his own band, Phil Mason's New Orleans All-Stars , with whom he released a number of albums on the Lake Records label. For health reasons, he stopped organizing the festival in 2010. In the field of jazz he was involved in 39 recording sessions between 1971 and 2007.
