BB & The Blues Shacks are a German blues band from Hildesheim in Lower Saxony that was founded in 1989. The band has played over 3000 live concerts in Germany, Europe, the USA, Dubai, Australia and South Africa.

style

The band plays “authentic blues” in the style of the Fabulous Thunderbirds , from Little Walter , T-Bone Walker , Slim Harpo , Walter Horton and Tiny Grimes . BB & The Blues Shacks master different styles of blues such as Chicago blues , Louisiana blues or Delta blues of the 40s and 50s. First and foremost, original compositions are played, but pieces by their role models such as Sonny Boy Williamson are also interpreted.

history

BB & The Blues Shacks were founded in August 1989 by Andreas Arlt (guitar), Andreas Bock (drums) and Martin Schlockwerder (bass) in Lamspringe near Hildesheim from the remnants of the band Boogie Bock and die Beinharten. Andreas' brother Michael (vocals and harmonica) was brought in as the front man that same month. The name should express the musical closeness to BB King , and it was also the initials of the nickname from drummer Boogie Bock .

Initially, the Blues Shacks played on every available stage and changed personnel. Foreign compositions increasingly gave way to own pieces. Their breakthrough can be seen with the appearance at the Breminale Festival on May 20, 1994, when they replaced Sherman Robertson and Thomas Ritter, musician and head of the record label Stumble Records, caught the eye. The debut CD Feelin 'Fine Today with ten original compositions and three cover versions was released in 1994.

Stumble also released Jive Talk, Slow Walk, in 1995, on which Chicago's Mike McCurdy played bass after Peter Reichhardt left the band. In 1996 the band was invited to the Notodden Blues Festival in Norway, the largest Scandinavian blues festival and one of the largest in Europe. At the same time, BB & The Bues Shacks were voted the most popular German blues act for the second time in a row by the readers of the German blues magazine Bluesnews .

In January 1997, BB & The Blues Shacks went to California , where Richard Duran produced their third studio album, Reality Show , which Jerry Hall mixed. They finally toured together with the American blues and soul singer Tad Robinson , who was also known as a member of Dave Specter & The Bluebirds since the Breminale in 1994. This was followed by a CD live production, which was recorded in 1998 in Lucerne at the Swiss Lucerne Blues Festival and is entitled BB & The Blues Shacks with special guest Tad Robinson: Live at the Lucerne Blues Festival . This album was also released in a long box limited to 1000 copies.

For the 10th anniversary of the band in 1999, Straight Blues, Big Swing were released simultaneously as The Blues Edition and The Swing Edition . While The Blues Edition included pieces by the Arlt brothers, The Swing Edition presented 17 interpretations by other artists and its own composition. The Straight Blues, Big Swing albums were the last releases on Stumble Records.

In November 1999 BB & The Blues Shacks established their own self-organized blues festival in their hometown of Hildesheim. Since then it has taken place every year, has been sold out regularly and has since taken a permanent place in the international blues calendar.

In 2000 they played in Athens, toured Italy and the Netherlands and played at festivals in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and at the most important British blues festival, the “Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival” in Colne. In October the band accompanied the saxophonist Erskine Oglesby from St. Louis on tour and decided to repeat this a year later.

In 2001, BB & The Blues Shacks were signed to CrossCut and recorded their # 6 studio album, entitled Midnite Diner . A 7-country tour followed. In 2003 BB & The Blues Shacks played a series of concerts in Russia for the first time, including at the Moscow Blues Festival. Later, the live CD and DVD Live at Vier Linden, released in 2006, was recorded in the “Vier Linden” club in Hildesheim during the Blues Shacks Festival there. In November of the same year BB & The Blues Shacks toured Finland with singer Finis Tasby from Los Angeles because Michael Arlt had to undergo an operation.

In 2008 the tenth album Unique Taste was released . It is the first CD on which bassist Henning Hauerken increasingly uses an electric bass, as a tribute to the 1960s, soul and R'n'B of that time. Unique Taste received the German Record Critics' Prize . Guest musicians on the album were Raphael Wressnig (Hammond-B3) and Frank "Pepe" Peters (backing vocals)

Before this album, BB & The Blues Shacks released their first EP , which included both the title track and the track Too Fast Living from the subsequent album, as well as a previously unreleased eight-minute live recording of Tell Me What's The Reason from the Live at Vier Linden recordings and the video track Three-Handed Woman , which differs from the album version.

The band went to London in 2010 to record their new album, which was titled London Days . This album was also released for the first time as a vinyl LP. In addition, the Blues Shacks received the German Blues Awards 2010 and 2011.

In 2011, BB & The Blues Shacks saw three festivals on three different continents in just four months: in January they played at the Dubai Jazz Festival, in April they performed at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia and again at the Doheny Bluesfestival in May. In the same year guitarist Andreas "A (r) li" Arlt fulfilled a dream and recorded his first solo album All Time Favorites , on which he interpreted pieces of music that had influenced and moved him.

The 25th anniversary of the band was celebrated on the stage of the Hildesheim “Vier Linden” with musician friends from Europe and the USA as part of a Blues Shacks Festival extended for this occasion. In addition to the No Blow No Show Horns and the Shackettes, Mike Andersen (DK), Marc TEE (B), Alex Schultz (USA), Bonita (D), Trickbag (S, FIN, GB) were part of the party and together with the Blues Shacks on stage.
