Shoreham-by-Sea, formerly New Shoreham, is a town in the district of Adur in West Sussex , England . The place has an area of 9.85 km² and 48,487 inhabitants (2011).
The history of the place goes back to the 11th century, when Vikings settled the place because of its mooring possibilities. The seaport of Shoreham Harbor, which was built in Victorian times and is located on the English Channel , is a major economic factor of the place, there are also numerous shipyards .
The airport Shoreham Airport west of the city is the oldest licensed UK airport, which among other things, in a scene in the film The Da Vinci Code - Da Vinci Code occurs.
The place is connected to the rail network.
Five ships of the Royal Navy were named after the place.
