David Ryall

David John Ryall (born January 5, 1935 in Shoreham-by-Sea , West Sussex , † December 25, 2014 ) was a British theater and film actor who worked mainly for British theater and television from the 1970s until his death was active.

life and career

David John Ryall graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1962 during which he won the Caryl Brahams Award for his role in a musical. This was followed by theater engagements in Salisbury , Bristol , Leicester and Birmingham . From 1965 to 1973 he was part of the ensemble of the Old Vic Theater in London.

In 1994 Ryall starred in Peter Hall's production of What You Want To See, a role that earned him high critical acclaim. From 1996 to 1997 he was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company . His role as Polonius in the play Hamlet , with which he also appeared in the United States , earned him a nomination for the Helen Hayes Award . In 1999 he worked again with Peter Hall, this time at the West End Theater in the play Lenny . In 2005 he played Winston Churchill in the French biopic Charles de Gaulle - I am France! (Le Grand Charles) on the life of Charles de Gaulle . 2007-2011 he played the role of of dementia diseased Frank in the BBC - sitcom Outnumbered . A year later he took on the role of Mr. Paget in the BBC mystery series Crooked House . In 1992 he also played a leading role in the BBC miniseries Witchcraft . Overall, he was seen in more than 130 film and television productions. In 2010 he played the wizard Elphias Doge in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 .

Ryall was the father of a son (* 1966) and two daughters (* 1967 and 1986). He died in December 2014, a few days before his 80th birthday.
