Mr. Turner is a 2014 British feature film directed by Mike Leigh . Timothy Spall stars in the lead role of the British landscape painter William Turner .
action
The film begins when Turner is already a well-known and reasonably wealthy landscape painter. He lives with his father, a former barber, who helps him prepare the paints and canvases and take care of visitors. As an eccentric, generous and humorous loner, Turner is often monosyllabic to the point of rudeness in social dealings, but can also use very educated language.
Scenes show how Turner finds the basic ideas for his pictures. His sketchbook is a constant companion and basis of his pictures. The old seaman Booth tells that he was a carpenter on a slave ship, and Turner then paints his picture The Slave Ship . Turner and attendants are rowed on the Thames and can watch a warship being towed to be scrapped. Turner paints The Fighting Temeraire . On his travels he watches a steam train. This leads to the painting Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway .
He's always drawn to the seaside town of Margate , where he went to school. Here he paints the roaring sea and shows the power of light with intense colors, especially ocher and yellow tones. At one point he even lets himself be tied up on the high seas in the lookout of a sailing ship in order to better represent the drama of the sea on the screen. His fast painting technique was considered extraordinary, as well as his spitting on the canvas and certain closely guarded paint colors.
When his father dies, Turner falls into depression . First of all, he received recognition for his work as a painter through exhibitions. a. adding a buoy to his own image before all eyes . However, his images are becoming increasingly abstract and he is losing recognition from his wealthy, noble customers after Queen Victoria commented negatively about them. In the Royal Academy he is still respected, but also isolated as an eccentric. While his London house with the attached sales rooms is ultimately only inhabited by his housekeeper, the painter takes refuge in Margate with the practically gifted landlady and widow Sophia Booth, who takes care of him until his death. The last shot shows Turner's housekeeper in his now abandoned studio with paints and canvases.
In his will, Turner decreed that his works should go to the British state. At the end of his life, he refuses to sell his entire art collection to a wealthy citizen.

reception
The film-dienst judged that the film tirelessly brought together "a myriad of loosely connected moments and episodes from Turner's last 25 years - a mosaic of his life, but also the circumstances of the time and its challenges". The film magazine Cinema said that the film caused enthusiasm in Cannes not least because of Timothy Spall's performance. The color scheme of the film, which is based on the “aesthetics of the painter”, makes the film itself a work of art. The film website kino.de describes the film drama as a “brilliant film biography” that is “consistently fascinating, but largely dispenses with emotional involvement”. Rudolf Worschech from the film magazine epd Film considers the film to be “one of the most fascinating artist films in recent years. Leigh does not push the artist off his pedestal, nor does he give him the halo of genius. "
