Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on December 24, 1991 that Mike Leigh works in a unique way: he gathers the actors who would improvise and work on the script for weeks and months. The film contains more humor and more sharpness than most scriptwriters would dare. It is one of the best films of the year. The film is as " funny, spontaneous and free " as if it had been produced by a millionaire for fun and shows which films can be made without the constraints of the usual production process.

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was "a social satire on Britain's petty bourgeoisie " and a " shrill attack on 'lauded' Thatcherism ".

Awards

Jane Horrocks won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1991 . Mike Leigh won the Danish Bodil in 1992 and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award . The film won in 1992 as a British film of the year the London Critics Circle Film Award . Alison Steadman, Jane Horrocks and Best Picture won the 1992 US National Society of Film Critics Award .
