Peterloo is a British period drama directed by Mike Leigh that premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2018 and was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on November 2, 2018.
action
After the Napoleonic Wars, parts of Britain were plagued by poverty, unemployment and famine. Against this background, a massive protest movement formed in the Manchester area in 1819. Your main demand is a reform of the electoral law that systematically benefits wealthy citizens and allows the poorer sections of the population only a minimal political say. Finally, the local authorities deploy troops, including a mounted hussar unit, against a large demonstration. The arrest of the leaders leads to a bloodbath in which many protesters lose their lives.
Historical background
In the Peterloo massacre at St. Peter's Field near Manchester on August 16, 1819 , fifteen people were killed and over 650 injured. It was the result of a cavalry attack on a peaceful protest against the Corn Laws . The rally was organized by the Manchester Patriotic Union Society to demonstrate against grain tariffs and for parliamentary reform. The speakers included Richard Carlile , John Cartwright and Henry Hunt .
According to estimates at the time, the number of demonstrators was between 30,000 and 150,000, and more recent estimates between 60,000 and 80,000. 600 hussars , 120 Yeomanry cavalrymen and two six-pounder cannons, as well as several hundred infantrymen and police officers, were provided to break up the gathering and arrest the leaders . Henry Hunt, Joseph Johnson, and several others, including journalists, were arrested. The crowd resisted, however, as a result of which there were high numbers of people killed and injured.
production
It was directed by Mike Leigh , who also wrote the script. With Peterloo after Topsy-Turvey from 1999, the British filmmaker goes back to the 19th century for the first time. About his idea for the film, Leigh said: “There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo Massacre. The universal significance of this historic event becomes ever more relevant in our own turbulent times. "
The main female role of Nellie was cast by the English actress Maxine Peake . Rory Kinnear took on the roles of leader Henry Hunt and Karl Johnson of Home Secretary Lord Sidmouth. Johnson had already been given a larger role in Leigh's last film, Mr. Turner - Masters of Light . Alastair Mackenzie plays General Sir John Byng. David Moorst plays the young trumpeter Joseph, Tim McInnerny the Prince Regent, and Leo Bill takes on the role of John Tyas
The film was shot in Lincoln , England . As a cameraman of several awards for one acted Oscar nominee Dick Pope . Jacqueline Durran was responsible for the design of the costumes . The soundtrack was composed by Gary Yershon , who, like cinematographer Dick Pope, had already worked with Leigh on Leigh's last film, Mr. Turner - Masters of Light . At the beginning of November 2018, Dubois Records released an EP with selected pieces of the film music. Suzie Davies and Charlotte Dirickx acted as production designers .
The film premiered on September 1, 2018 as part of the Venice Film Festival , where it was screened in the main competition and was nominated for the Golden Lion . In September 2018 a screening took place as part of the Toronto International Film Festival , and a screening at the London Film Festival is planned from October 17, 2018 . Peterloo was released in cinemas in the UK on November 2, 2018 . A cinema release in the USA took place on April 5, 2019. At the end of June and beginning of July 2019 it was shown at the Munich Film Festival in the CineMasters competition.
reception
Reviews
The film has so far received the approval of 65 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .
Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent noticed that Mike Leigh, in spite of a huge ensemble, had shown a love for detail and a fascination for the eccentricity of human behavior that have always characterized his work. Leigh filled the film with the kind of characters one would expect in a Charles Dickens novel or a Hogarth painting , such as pompous dignitaries and arrogant army officers. He portrays the Prince Regent as a decadent clown and even the speaker Henry Hunt as a little narcissist basking in the adoration of the masses. Macnab also notes that the film has no hero, neither Hunt played by Rory Kinnear , nor Maxine Peake as a matriarch trying to keep her family together in the face of extreme hardship. Rather, it is about the collective experience of the massacre.
