Henry Hunt

Henry "Orator" Hunt (born November 6, 1773 in Upavon , Wiltshire , † February 15, 1835 ) was a British radical orator.

Hunt was a wealthy farmer. During the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) he was drawn into radical politics, where he supported Francis Burdett . When in Bristol condemned the complacency of the Whigs and Tories , and made himself a supporter of democratic radicalism, his talent for public speaking was recognized. His rousing speeches at mass gatherings at the Spa Fields Riots in late 1816 made him known as the "Orator".

After the Peterloo massacre in August 1819, he was imprisoned for 30 months.

Hunt is portrayed by Rory Kinnear in the 2018 film Peterloo , which is about the Peterloo massacre .
