Another Year is a 2010 British film directed by Mike Leigh .
action
The film is divided into four chapters: spring, summer, autumn and winter. He tells of a year in the life of the married couple Tom and Gerri, both in their early 60s. Tom works as a geologist and Gerri as a psychologist, and their 30-year-old son Joe is a lawyer. The couple live in loving harmony. They work together on the weekends in their allotment garden and take care of the problems of their nearest and dearest. There is especially Mary who is looking for support from her colleague Gerri. Mary is in her early 50s, divorced and lonely. She is desperately looking for a partner for life. The unmarried Joe becomes the object of her desire, which she, however, lets her run into emptiness with all her advances. Nice Joe becomes an obsession for Mary the more she consumes alcohol. An old childhood friend of Tom's who comes to visit in the summer is just as lonely. Ken is alone and unhappy with his job. He suffers from overeating and drinks too much. In Mary he sees a fellow sufferer. However, Mary does not want to know anything about the unsavory Ken.
In the fall, Joe introduces his girlfriend Katie to his parents. When Mary realizes that she has no chance with Joe, she makes his girlfriend bad with Gerri. This leads to the rupture between the two women. When Tom's brother Ronnie's wife dies in the winter, Tom goes to his hometown with Gerri and Joe for the funeral. Tom persuades Ronnie to move in with them in London for a while. While Tom and Gerri work in their allotment garden, the older brother is at home alone. On this day, Mary comes to visit unannounced for the first time in three months. She recognizes a good friend in the widower Ronnie. The film ends while eating together in Tom and Gerri's house, when Mary finds it depressingly difficult to integrate into the conversation at the table.

“Divided into the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, Mike Leigh describes the fragility of the in his heart-touching film Another Year with all of its outstanding actors and a fine balance of tragedy and comedy, laconic cynicism and great empathy for his characters Happiness, the seemingly unfair juxtaposition of contentment and despair, the threatening loneliness and the escape into alcohol, the inexorable aging and approaching death.
