action

The 30-year-old primary school teacher Pauline, called Poppy, is always in a good mood and friendly to everyone. She lives in London with her roommate Zoe . Even when her bike is stolen, she takes it easy. She takes great pleasure in her work and gets along well with her sister Suzy and her roommate and colleague Zoe. The three roam London clubs and decide the next morning to visit pregnant Helen, the third sister.

Instead of buying a new bike, Poppy wants to get a driver's license. She takes her first driving lesson from the grouchy driving instructor Scott. This is her exact opposite in character. She reacts to Scott's instructions with serenity and incomprehension, for example she is supposed to lock the doors when Scott sees two dark-skinned cyclists on the street, or change her high boots.

Poppy meets up with the school principal, Heather, and takes her to an emotionally upsetting flamenco lesson. Then the two of them go to a pub . Heather wants to know from Poppy how it is with her in love, to which Poppy replies that it has not really sparked with her. But Poppy enthusiastically talks about her trip around the world with Zoe, about Asia and Australia.

At school she watches a classmate hitting another. On the third driving lesson, Scott loses patience and thinks Poppy is deliberately teasing him. Scott also turns out to be a psychopath in this driving lesson, babbling about multiculturalism and conspiracies. Poppy doesn't respond to that. Another fight breaks out at school, this time Poppy intervenes. When there is trouble with the same boy again at school and she cannot get hold of him, Heather suggests calling in a specialist. On the way home, in the middle of the night, Poppy engages in a conversation with a homeless man, to whom she became aware of his incomprehensible singing.

In a conversation, the social worker Tim finds out that the beating student is being abused by his mother's friend. Meanwhile, a flirt develops between Poppy and Tim and they exchange their phone numbers. The next driving lesson will be very personal; there is a lot of misunderstanding. Scott thinks Poppy is a lesbian and he doesn't understand a joke about a heavy goods train. This builds up such anger in him that Poppy ends up in the passenger seat.

The next day Poppy, Suzy and Zoe drive to Helen's barbecue. Married, pregnant and with a home of her own, she is the opposite of her sister and challenges her to grow up. During a walk along the coast, Poppy calls Tim and makes an appointment with him. On her return, she catches Scott watching her apartment, but immediately disappearing when he notices the three of them. Poppy meets Tim on a date and they both spend the night together.

The next morning, Tim brings Poppy home and meets Zoe and the driving instructor Scott. When they say goodbye, there is a kiss. Scott regards this as a provocation. When she asks him shortly afterwards what he was doing with her the day before, he denies everything. Poppy's direct way of questioning things made Scott angrier, which also affects his driving style. Arriving at the destination where the driving lesson usually begins, Poppy refuses to take the lesson. She wants to drive Scott home because she thinks he cannot drive in this situation. A physical altercation ensues; Poppy frees herself from the car and Scott runs after her. He furiously accuses her of only using it; she first flirted with him and then let him down.

When she has been able to calm him down a bit, when asked about the next driving lesson, she gives him the car keys, shaking her head. Poppy walks home with a sad look.

She and her roommate, who wants to quit smoking, row together on a lake. Zoe suggests that Poppy stop being so kind to everyone. Rather, she should report Scott. Poppy, however, disagrees; she doesn't think Scott was helped. You realize how happy you actually are. In the end, Tim calls and tells her how much he loves her. So they keep rowing.

background

  • During the rather pessimistic competition at the 58th Berlinale , Mike Leigh's optimistic film stood out in particular. Since it was Leigh's first comedy since Life is Sweet ( 1991 ), "the world premiere of the film on the occasion of this year's 58th Berlinale also caused quite a stir and aroused general astonishment among critics and audiences".
  • Was shot u. a. at Camden Market and for the boat scene in Regent's Park .
  • Leigh himself emphasizes that he only discovered his films while they were being shot. Through his years of theater experience, his films become actor films. About six months before shooting begins, he lets his actors improvise and invent the characters together. The script for Happy-Go-Lucky was also created during rehearsals; but as soon as it came to filming, improvising was over.
  • The film was shown in German cinemas from July 3, 2008, and in Austrian cinemas from the following day.

Reviews

  • ARTE (by Nana A. T. Rebhan), February 19, 2008: “Sally Hawkins plays Poppy, no, she is Poppy. She seems to be absorbed in this role, every smallest movement is consistent. One of the reasons for this is the unique working method with which director Mike Leigh prepares his actors for their roles. [...] Mike Leigh proves that he can also direct comedies, and he also shows that a film does not necessarily need a plot. "
  • Der Tagesspiegel (Jan Schulz-Ojala on the Berlinale), February 13th, 2008: “With an English film in which the true sun shines indefatigably, Mike Leigh, one of the great veterans of New British Cinema, conquers his audience in a storm of laughter and - at last! - with applause from the scene. The good mood demonstrated in Happy-Go-Lucky, however, has to assert itself against existential tragedy; consequently the end is not happy with confectionery, but more beautiful, wider and more open. Yes, if he's as lucky as his heroine, then Mike Leigh will do the golden hat trick perfectly - and after the Palm for Lies and Secrets (1996) and the Lion for Vera Drake (2004) in Berlin, he will get his Golden Bear. "
  • die tageszeitung (by Christian Ihle & Horst Motor), February 12, 2008: “The assembled press was enthusiastic, the laughs come every minute and are never at the expense of the characters. Mike Leigh has succeeded in creating a wonderful piece of cinema in which one cannot rule out the possibility that, after winning Venice with his last film Vera Drake, he will alsopick up a prizein Berlin with Happy-Go-Lucky . Poppy actress Sally Hawkins can now dress up for the main actor award ceremony. "
