José Padilha
José Padilha (born August 1, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian director , documentary filmmaker and producer . He made numerous films and television productions.
He first directed the documentary Ônibus 174 in 2002 , in which he tells the story of the hijacking of a bus in Rio de Janeiro . The film is based on a true story on June 12, 2000 in which the kidnapper and a hostage were killed.
In 2007 Padilha made the film Tropa de Elite , in which he addresses the corruption of the Rio de Janeiro police and their brutal fight against the drug mafia . The film hit the Internet two months before it officially opened in theaters and has been seen in black by around 12 million people. Nevertheless, the film became the most successful cinema production in Brazil in 2007. On February 16, 2008, he won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival . The film had previously received criticism both in Brazil and internationally for its excessive portrayal of violence.
In 2008 he made the documentary Garapa about hunger in Brazil based on the everyday life of three families.
In 2011 Padilha presented Tropa de Elite 2 at the Berlinale , which continues the plot of the first part. In 2015, the Netflix series Narcos was published about Pablo Escobar , in which Padilha is involved as a director and producer.
