Providence is a French feature film in English from 1977. It is the first English-language film by French director Alain Resnais .
action
Clive Langham is a writer and lives in Providence , Rhode Island . Clive is an alcoholic and lives secluded in his house. One night he is working on his new novel. He is writing a story about his own family. The main characters are his two sons Claude and Kevin, as well as Claude's wife Sonia. Tormented by the effects of alcohol, Clive fantasizes a story far removed from reality. The next day is his birthday and his family visits him. He now has to realize that the nocturnal fantasies have nothing to do with real life.

Cinema's verdict was: "Toxic, multilayered family satire."
Awards
1977 was John Gielgud to the role of Clive Actor Award of the New York Film Critics Circle . A year later, the film was awarded the Prix Méliès of the French Film Critics Association (AFCC) and seven Césars , including the award for the best French film of the year. In Denmark , Providence was awarded the Bodil for best European film of the year in 1978 .
