Elaine Stritch (born February 2, 1925 in Detroit , Michigan , † July 17, 2014 in Birmingham , Michigan) was an American actress .

Life

Elaine Stritch studied acting at Erwin Piscator's Dramatic Workshop at New York's New School . In 1944 she made her stage debut, and in 1946 she first appeared on Broadway . She later worked there and in London on productions such as Bus Stop , Sail Away , A Delicate Balance , Show Boat and Company . As a singer, she became known with songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart , Noël Coward and Stephen Sondheim .

Stritch first appeared on television in 1948 in the comedy production Growing Paynes . In 1954 she made a few appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show , and in 1960 she starred in the sitcom My Sister Eileen .

Her first major film role was in The Scarlet Hour in 1956 ; the next major film productions with her took place only during the 1970s. In 1972 she married the actor John Bay and lived and worked in London for several years; u. a. She played here in 1975 alongside Donald Sinden in the television film Two's Company . She has also appeared frequently as a guest star on various television series, including an episode of Trapper John, MD , three episodes of The Bill Cosby Show, or two episodes of Behind the Moon Immediately Left .

In the late 1980s, films such as September and Cocoon II - The Return were made . She found great recognition in the role of Parthy Hawkes in the 1994 Broadway revival of Show Boat . For her solo program Elaine Stritch: At Liberty (2002) she received numerous awards, including a Tony Award . In 2007 she was a guest actress in the NBC -Sitcom 30 Rock with the Emmy Award award. In total, she received the award three times in her career. She was nominated three more times, most recently in 2009 for her guest appearance as Colleen Donaghy in the 30-rock episode Christmas Special .
