action

The married couple Nick and Kitty Murder have two teenage daughters, Baby and Constance, and the "adopted daughter" Rosebud also lives in the house. When Kitty finds out that her husband is cheating on her with a certain Tula, an argument ensues, in which the daughters are also included. Kitty refuses to speak to her husband ever again. Nick tries to save his marriage. But he continues to meet with Tula, for the sake of whom he even lets himself be circumcised.

Kitty's daughter Baby and her boyfriend Fryburg, a boy from the neighborhood, son of one of Kitty's acquaintances, who was also betrayed and abandoned by her husband, become engaged. When Kitty finds out, she forbids her teenage daughter from marrying so young. Baby now hopes to at least get her father's approval, but Nick fully agrees with his wife, which leaves Baby speechless. When trying to explain to her friend Fryburg that she would like to wait with the marriage after all, the two of them quarrel and separate. Nick, who watched the argument from the window, suffers from a kind of intestinal colic , which is why he has to be taken to the hospital by the emergency services . There his mother visits him, who is appalled that Nick, like his father and grandfather, has taken a lover. Meanwhile, Kitty, accompanied by her cousin Bo, goes looking for her competitor Tula. Kitty eventually finds her in a lingerie shop where she works as a saleswoman. After a verbal exchange of blows, the two women fight.

Nick has decided to split up with Tula and win back his wife. During the separation interview, there is an argument with Tula, who developed serious feelings for Nick and had hopes for a future together. Kitty still refuses to talk to Nick. Nevertheless, both continue to live in the same house. Months go by. In the winter there is an argument between Kitty and her neighbor's crazy friend, the fruit seller. When Nick arrives, the situation escalates. Both men want to fight. When she tries to keep him from the fight, Kitty speaks to her husband for the first time since the Tula affair. Nick, delighted, has a fight with the fruit seller. When Nick is lying on the ground and his head is repeatedly hit by the other person on the pavement, Kitty steps in and hits the fruit seller in the face with a hedge that has been torn out. Then Nick and Kitty sit together at the kitchen table and have been talking to each other again for ages. A little later Nick is diagnosed with lung cancer, of which he dies a little later.

Reviews

Ray Bennett wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 7, 2005 that the film was " loud and pointless crude ." He praised the performances by Christopher Walken , Steve Buscemi and Elaine Stritch .

“On the other hand, we definitely wish a lion for John Turturro and his wonderfully exuberant working class musical 'Romance & Cigarettes'. Greatly cast and played with James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken, the film basically tells the simple story of a bridge worker from Queens who cheats on his wife and is about to leave his family. What sounds like the usual concrete-gray Mike Leigh fabric explodes through extremely weird singing and dance interludes (the actors move their lips in sync with numerous street hits from the 50s and 60s) to a colorful revue about love and life, "
