action

Charlie Gordon's passion is horse racing , but he's out of luck with betting and now owes his bookmaker more than $ 3,000  . Charlie decides to change location and is hired as a dancer on a luxury liner. Problem: he has no idea about dancing; Solution: he takes his widowed brother-in-law, Herb, because he is a passionate dancer, on the pretext of taking him on a cruise. On board, however, they come across Gil Godwyn, the cruise director and military-trained entertainer. This is a disgust like out of a picture book and demands the utmost discipline from his dancers. However, he did not expect the ingenuity of Charlie, who repeatedly shirked his duties and sneaked into the casino to catch a lonely millionaire who would take his name and put it in her bank account.

In fact, he finds what he is looking for in the attractive Liz LaBreche, who also seems to be interested in him. However, there is a catch: Liz, like Charlie, is completely destitute because her oil wells have long dried up and she is now looking for a financially advantageous match herself. Herb, meanwhile, has fallen in love with Vivian, who is also widowed, but has a guilty conscience because he promised his wife on his deathbed that he would only love her, forever and ever.

In the end, however, they all come together and leave the MS Westerdam in a rented seaplane with a check for 18,000 US dollars, which Charlie won at a poker game, and fly towards their well-deserved happy ending. Gil also gets what he deserves, as he has disparaged the owner of the luxury liner, who was standing right behind him at that moment. As a result, he has lost his position as cruise director and, to top it all, can now work off the costs of his passage himself as a dancing dancer.

Others

  • The luxury liner used for filming is the Holland-America Line's "Westerdam" .
  • Tango like? was
    • Donald O'Connor's last film before he retired
    • Edward Mulhar's last film; he died shortly after the shooting,
    • the penultimate joint film by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
  • So that Charlie can take the place of Cullen Carswell on a shore excursion with Liz, he fakes a call from " Donald Trump from Zurich " for him.

criticism

"In principle, is" Tango pleasing? " an episode of " Das Traumschiff " blown up to cinema format , so hardly worth mentioning: old saddlecloths stroll across the sun deck, grinning seniors swing their legs over five o'clock tea, and when the bell rings for the shore excursion, the usual amorous entanglements await us Misunderstandings. Luckily Lemmon and Matthau went on board. Actually, they cannot afford this Mexico cruise and are therefore supposed to ensure a good mood among the female passengers as so-called host (for food and lodging). And as expected, the two cause wonderfully chaotic conditions. "

“The harmless comedy lives from the well-established duo Matthau / Lemmon. The ease with which the "crazy couple" throws loving cheekiness at each other in their last film together stands in stark contrast to the clumsy direction by Martha Coolidge ("Angie"). "

“A comedy tailored entirely to the Lemmon / Matthau comedy duo without sparkling ideas that wants to capitalize on the cast alone. Apart from a few successful cabinet pieces, it fails because of the average book and the uninspired direction. "
