Hal Linden , actually Harold Lipshitz , (born March 20, 1931 in New York City , New York ) is an American actor .

Life

Hal Linden was born Harold Lipshitz in New York City to Frances Rosen and Charles Lipshitz. He studied at the Manhattan School of Performing Arts and then worked as a clarinetist and singer. During a stop at a gas station in Linden , New Jersey , he takes the stage name Hal Linden. He then did his military service in the United States Army , where his interest in acting began. After his release, he began his acting training in the New York American Theater Wing . He was able to establish himself as a stage actor and was awarded a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1971 for his performance in the musical The Rothschilds .

He received his most famous role in 1975. For the series Barney Miller he was cast for the lead role of Captain Barney Miller , which he played from 1975 to 1982 in 171 episodes. For his portrayal he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Series - Comedy or Musical from 1976 to 1978 and 1981 . He was also nominated for an Emmy seven times in a row from 1976 to 1982 .

During his time at the theater in New York in 1955, he met the dancer Francis Martin, whom he married on April 13, 1958. Both have four children together.
