The men get a creeping fear of being alone. You get to know the art professor Ariel, who moves into the immediate vicinity of the two. Both court the woman. Meanwhile, a debt collection agent for Gustafson's health insurance company wants to take his house away. After Gustafson's heart attack , Goldman confesses his friendship to him, saves his life, helps him financially and helps Gustafson marry Ariel. The two men's children, Goldman Jr. and Gustafson's daughter, become a couple.

Reviews

The film received mostly benevolent reviews, earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 43 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 53, based on 16 reviews, could be achieved.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film has some problems, but it works more often than it doesn't. Lemmon and Matthau are "perfect" for the roles they play.

Cinema magazine described the film as a “mild seniors farce” that touches on serious issues and resolves them “in the style of a Neil Simon comedy (...) with pleasure”. It is "tailored to Lemmon and Matthau", who "prove that even at an advanced age they have lost none of the playful mood that has made their comedies classics".

Prisma Online wrote: “Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have beenamong the most successful comedian duos in film historysince they first appeared together in Billy Wilder's The Lucky One in 1965. This late work provides the best evidence of her comedic skills. Although this is more or less “only” a variant of their hit film A Strange Couple (1967), the two old “sacks” show their talent here again. Remarkable: Burgess Meredith as a 94-year-old grandfather. "

The lexicon of international films said: “Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau freshen up the gruff humor in their film“ A Strange Couple ”. But the film, which is not exactly squeamish in the dialogue, drags on too much, and its comedy wears off too early for the good representation to compensate for the disappointing story. "

Awards

Alan Silvestri received the BMI Film Music Award in 1994 .
