action

The Portuguese-born sisters Daisy and Kat Arujo live with their single mother in simple circumstances in the small town of Mystic in Massachusetts . Daisy is more relaxed and fun-loving, Kat is considerate and reserved. Together with her friend Jojo, they both work as waitresses in the pizzeria Mystic Pizza . This is run by the older and resolute Leona, who keeps the ingredients for her pizzas a great secret.

Jojo is engaged to the fisherman Bill. The two’s wedding ceremony marks the beginning of the film. The wedding bursts, because when Jojo hears the wedding vows at the altar and realizes the implications, she passes out. The bridesmaid Daisy Arujo smiles enigmatically, amused. In the following years Jojo is plagued by doubts as to whether she should really marry Bill, especially because Bill urges her to do so with moral reproaches and withdrawal of love.

Kat receives admission to study at Yale University and a partial scholarship. In addition to working in the pizzeria, she also works as a guide in the planetarium and is also a babysitter for the four-year-old daughter in the household of the married architect Tim Travers. His wife is in England for professional reasons. She falls in love with the older man, who reciprocates her feelings and is deeply desperate when his wife returns from Europe and the relationship that has just begun is abruptly ended by the architect. This suffering brings the otherwise fundamentally different and often arguing sisters together.

Charles, a Porsche driver and the son of wealthy parents, sees Daisy in a pub, finds her address, advertises her and they both become lovers. Because she sees Charles in a club with another woman who is his sister, she jealously empties two fish barrels into his convertible. When he later introduced her to his family as his steadfast girlfriend at an evening invitation, Charles and his father, who were idle at university, provoke each other. Charles loses control and throws dishes and cutlery from the table. Daisy does not agree with Charles' behavior and attitude to life and she separates from him in an argument.

All three friends are now single again and see their next future in the pizzeria. The architect appears with the little daughter to say goodbye to Kat and gives Kat a check as a contribution to her studies. Kat tears up the check, visibly disturbed but self-confident. A well-known restaurant reviewer visits Mystic Pizza ; he publishes a very positive review on television that makes the friends forget their pent-up grief. They are delighted that the restaurant is now becoming better known and that a guest even wants to reserve a table by telephone after the show.

Jojo and Bill decide to get married after all. During the celebration in the pizzeria, which is framed by Portuguese songs and dances, Leona gives Kat a loan for her studies. She says she has no children of her own; Daisy, Kat and Jojo are like their children. Charles appears surprisingly at the wedding party, he pretends to be refined to Daisy, and after a brief hesitation she hangs him up while serving. In the final scene, the three friends meet on the back stairs of the restaurant for a glass of champagne, Daisy declares her reconciliation with Charles as unsure, Kat has to promise Daisy not to fall in love with older men at Yale University, and everyone giggle meaningfully suspecting what Leona is putting into her pizzas.
