action

Ashley lives in New York City and works there for the PR agency Braden & Co. She is always lucky in her life. For example, if she leaves her apartment without an umbrella, the rain stops suddenly, and if she takes a taxi at rush hour, it has a green wave.

Jake is the opposite of Ashley and is always unlucky. He works as a janitor in a bowling club and is the manager of the British boys band McFly . He has been trying unsuccessfully for weeks to give Damon Phillips, the boss of Downtown Masquerade Records , a McFly CD to interest him in the band.

At Ashley's agency, Damon has an appointment to present a new PR strategy, but when agency boss Peggy Braden and her staff get stuck in the elevator, only Ashley shows up for the presentation. When Damon is about to leave, she improvises her own PR strategy, which includes a masked ball (matching the company name Masquerade ). Damon is excited about Ashley's plan and accepts. Ashley is then praised by her boss and receives her own office and a company credit card.

On the day of the masquerade ball, Ashley plans to pair her boss with her handsome neighbor Antonio. Jake is also at the party because he snuck in through the back entrance as a dancer to give Damon the CD. Jake runs into Ashley by chance and falls in love with her. As they both dance, they kiss, and at that moment luck and bad luck change people. Ashley's heel breaks off, her dress tears and her boss and her are arrested by the police because Antonio was a professional gigolo. Ashley is fired the same day and also loses her apartment. Jake, on the other hand, was able to save Damon's life and receives a recording contract from him for his band.

In order to regain her happiness, she visits Madame Zaffina (called Madame Z), who was engaged as a fortune teller at the party. She gets the tip from her that she has to kiss again the person she kissed on the dance floor in order to get her happiness back. Since the dancers were masked, she now goes to all the dancers one after the other to kiss them. She then checks whether it was the right one with a scratch card. After unsuccessful and unlucky, she happens to meet Jake, who gives her his former job. When she found out that Jake was also at the party and has been lucky ever since, she kisses him and gets her happiness back. She runs into her boss, who has now become engaged to Antonio, and is hired again.

However, Jake is unlucky again and a planned performance by McFly is about to fail. Ashley feels a remorse and kisses Jake again to restore her happiness. Then she wants to leave town by train so that Jake can keep his luck. Jake has been looking for her and finally finds her at Grand Central Terminal . He explains to her that bad luck comes and goes and that it is lucky for him that he has her. Ashley then decides to stay with him. When they see Jake's cousin Katy, both kiss Katy at the same time and happiness passes over her.

Reviews

“The romantic comedy fulfills all the conventions of the genre, but of course always remains on the surface. Due to the easily understandable concept and an intrusive product placement , the film, which is amusing at times, loses some of its sympathy values. "

"Lindsay Lohan plays as unshakably average as it can be conducive to the smooth establishment of her stardom."

- Peter Uehling - Berliner Zeitung

“In this chaste comedy, happiness means first of all the narcissistic elation of being delivered by chance a dress addressed to Sarah Jessica Parker . In the wake of the TV series " Sex and the City ", a glossy media industry is presented for the little sisters of those post-feminist New Yorkers, in which Gucci, stretch limousines and penthouse are the target of early adolescent longings. [..] So again the attempt is being made to get the so-called "pre-teens" to take their pocket money to the cinema instead of investing it in H&M clothes that look like Gucci from afar. That is why this well-designed little girl daydream is magical and fairytale. [..] But if you disregard the fact that the unlucky slapstick has a high yuck factor with dog poo, the comedy still develops charm when it regards love with karmic humor as a homeostatic yin and yang balance. "

- Birgit Roschy - Stern

Awards

Lindsay Lohan was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in two categories . The film itself received the third nomination.
