Ann-Margret
Ann-Margret (born April 28, 1941 as Ann-Margret Olsson in Valsjöbyn , Krokom municipality ) is a Swedish - American singer and actress . She has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
Life
Beginnings
Ann-Margret is the only child of the Swedish couple Anna and Gustav Olsson.
After the father had already worked as an electrician in the USA for a few years, the entire family finally emigrated in 1946 and settled in Illinois . In 1949 Ann-Margret was granted US citizenship.
As a child she received lessons in singing, dance and piano. In 1957, she was discovered during a TV talent competition by a manager of the American television show The Original Amateur Hour , which helped her to make her first television appearances. Recordings of a live music show led to their first record release in early 1959. At the same time, Ann-Margret finished high school and went on to study acting in Chicago . With two fellow students, she founded the group The Suttletones, which performed in Chicago clubs on the weekends, and later in Las Vegas and Los Angeles . A year later Ann-Margret dropped out of her studies to devote herself fully to show business.
Show career
With Warner Brothers she signed her first record deal and recorded two singles and an LP, which were unsuccessful. Her appearance in a Christmas show was more successful, which led RCA Records and 20th Century Fox to offer her a record and a film contract. While the first RCA record Lost Love was still a flop, I Just Don't Understand made it into the top 20 of the Billboard charts in September 1961 .
Her first film appearance in The Lower Ten Thousand earned her the Golden Globe for Best Female Young Star in 1962. However, further successes with single records did not want to set in, in contrast to the LP releases, which were still in demand. So in 1964 with Al Hirt the album Beauty and the Beard was created and with Lee Hazlewood in 1969 the album The Cowboy & the Lady .
Her second film State Fair , a remake of the musical film Fair of Love from 1945, was also successful and so she turned more to acting. At the side of Pat Boone and Bobby Darin , she was able to combine her singing and dancing skills. In 1963 she starred in the film musical Bye Bye Birdie , a parody of the Elvis Presley hype . The soundtracks of both films became bestsellers. Ann-Margret played and sang with Elvis Presley himself in the 1964 music film Tolle Nights in Las Vegas . Due to the commercial success of the film, she made it to 8th place this year on the ranking of the stars who achieve the highest box office profits with their films, maintained by the US publishing company Quigley. Also in 1964 she starred with Alain Delon in the film Once a Thief .
After other films rated negatively by the critics, the fame faded in the second half of the sixties. Only the poker film Cincinnati Kid brought her success with both audiences and critics in 1965. The film The Swinger from 1966 can be seen as the low point . The film and record industries lost interest in it, it was the time of the new generation of hippies. In 1967 RCA released the last single with Ann-Margret and then dissolved the record deal. She continued her career with variety appearances in Las Vegas, her own television shows and films overseas.
She made her comeback in Hollywood in 1971 in a serious and demanding supporting role in the film The Art of Love at the side of Jack Nicholson , which earned her an Oscar nomination and another Golden Globe.
In addition to her Hollywood career, she was also a successful singer in Las Vegas and broke viewer records for Sammy Davis Jr. while performing in Miami .
In 1972 she suffered a serious accident while performing in Lake Tahoe . A stage platform fell with her into the depths. Only several operations could restore her face. Thirteen weeks later she was back on stage.
She played in the following years in films by Jacques Deray and Claude Chabrol in France and in England in the Henry Fielding film The Adventures of Joseph Andrews (1977) by Tony Richardson .
Perhaps her greatest success was in 1975, Tommy , the film adaptation of The Who rock opera , in which she played the mother of Roger Daltrey's Tommy. She sang, danced and won her third Golden Globe and was nominated again for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She starred alongside Anthony Hopkins in the psychological thriller Magic , in the western comedy Kaktus Jack with Kirk Douglas and Arnold Schwarzenegger , and in the married drama Middle Age Crazy alongside Bruce Dern .
At the end of the 1970s, Ann-Margret was able to gain a foothold on the music market again, placing herself on the disco charts with three singles . She was able to successfully continue her career into the 21st century. In the 1980s she was seen in leading roles alongside Jon Voight , Walter Matthau , Gene Hackman , Glenda Jackson , Alan Alda and Roy Scheider . She starred in action thrillers such as 52 Pick-up to Elmore Leonard as well as in family dramas, married comedies and romance films. She was also successful as a television actress. She appeared as the dying mother of eleven children in What will become of the children? on and in 1984 in the remake of the Tennessee Williams play Endstation Sehnsucht as Blanche DuBois. Her performance has received critical acclaim and she has again won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy .
In the 1990s she played the love object of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, first in the musical Newsies and then in the classic film Ein Verrücktes Paar (film) . She remained a sought-after television actress and continued to appear in movies. So z. B. 1999 in Oliver Stones Every Fucking Sunday and 2004 in the comedy New York Taxi . In 2006 she was seen as the mother of Jennifer Aniston in separation with obstacles and in the Tim Allen film Santa Clause 3 . In 2010 Ann-Margret was awarded the Emmy for her guest role as Rita Wills in the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . She was then seen in the 2011 film Lucky as the mother of lead actor Colin Hanks , in the 2018 film Papa and in guest appearances in the series The Kominsky Method (2018) and Happy! (2019)
In 1995, she was voted tenth of the 100 most attractive actors in film history in a survey by Empire Magazine and thirteenth in the list of the “sexiest film stars” of the century by Playboy . Ann-Margret has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1973 . It is located at 6501 Hollywood Boulevard and was awarded the North Star Order on December 2, 2008 , the second highest order of merit in the Kingdom of Sweden.
Private life
Ann-Margret was married to her fellow actor Roger Smith from May 8, 1967 until his death on June 4, 2017 . They had no children together themselves, but she raised his children from their first marriage.
