action

Charles Withers, called Corky, fails the first performance of his magic act. A year later he tries as a ventriloquist with the life-size doll Fats. His manager Ben Greene wants to get him his own TV show, but Corky refuses. He's scared of the psychological test that could reveal he has a personality disorder. He hears Fat's voice talking to him.

Corky goes into hiding and meets his old school friend, Peggy Ann, who is unhappily married. But not only Peggy's husband Duke becomes jealous, Fats is not satisfied either. Greene finds Corky. During a loud discussion, Greene realizes Corky's problem. The offered help knocks out Corky, Fats urges him to kill Greene. Corky kills Greene with the doll's wooden arm and sinks the body in a lake. The next morning, Fats gets even angrier when Corky thinks about disappearing with Peggy and leaving show business behind.

Peggy's husband Duke returns from a business trip. He and Peggy argue and Duke beats Peggy. Now Duke wants to have a word of clarification with Corky. The debate will take place in a boat on the lake. Duke discovers Greene's body, but first believes that help can still be provided. He sends Corky out to get help. Duke realizes Greene is dead and becomes suspicious. When Duke finds out Greene's identity, he is killed by Corky / Fats. When Corky tells Peggy to leave with him, Fats emerges. Peggy starts to get hysterical and takes refuge in her room. Fats wants Corky to kill her with a knife. At Peggy's door, Corky begs her forgiveness in Fat's voice. When he is himself again, he pulls out a bloody knife. It's his blood, Corky mortally wounded himself so he wouldn't kill anyone.
