Gray Owl is a dramatized biographical film about the English-born trapper of the same name , directed by Richard Attenborough in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan in the title role. In German-speaking countries it was shown in cinemas for the first time on April 13, 2000. The alternative title is Gray Owl and the Beaver's Treasure .
action
In the first years of the 20th century: The enigmatic Englishman Archie Belaney travels into the Canadian wilderness and lives as a trapper and adventurer who sees nature as his benefit and often works with dynamite and other explosives. When - after almost 30 years - he got to know and love the Mohawk Indian Pony, his point of view changed. Through their careful handling, he, who now calls himself Gray Owl, also learns to treat animals and their habitat with respect.
In order to pass on his knowledge to others and to educate the population about the fragile connection between the integrity of creation and well-being, he becomes a champion of this cause. When an avid reporter reveals that Gray Owl originally came from Europe, its veracity is questioned.
criticism
The lexicon of international films criticizes: “An old-fashioned staged film biography that gives the love story too much space and pushes environmental problems into the background. Since the sometimes overwhelmed actors hardly convey any tension to the film, the impressively photographed film gets lost in well-tended boredom. "
William Gallagher scoffs at bbc.co.uk: "What knocks out the film is its inviolable television mentality: the hero cannot lie."
Remarks
In reality, Belaney's true identity was only discovered after his death.
