Sir Donald Sinden (born October 9, 1923 in Plymouth , England , † September 11, 2014 in Kent , England) was a British actor.

Life

Donald Sinden was born as Donald Alfred Sinden in Plymouth in 1923 to Alfred Edward Sinden and his wife Mabel Agnes (Fuller). He made his debut as an actor in Brighton amateur theater in 1941 , but only a few months later he was already working as a professional actor. He performed regularly for the Army on the south coast of England during World War II. At this time he also befriended Oscar Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, and in 1945 Sinden was one of the only two people to attend Lord Alfred's funeral. He became a well-known theater actor and played alongside Ralph Richardson and Peggy Ashcroft in the late 1940sin The Heiress , directed by John Gielgud .

Already in his first film The Great Atlantic from 1952 he played the leading roles together with Jack Hawkins . In the 1950s, Sinden was under contract with the Rank Organization and directed 23 films for them, many of them major British films of their time. He also achieved great fame through the role of the medical student Beskin in the doctoral film series . In 1953 Sinden starred in John Ford's love drama Mogambo in Hollywood , where he played the betrayed husband of Grace Kelly . He later achieved success as a television actor in sitcoms such as Never the Twain and Judge John Deed .

In 1948 he married Diana Mahony. From the marriage the sons Jeremy Sinden (1950-1996), actor, and Marc Sinden (* 1954), director, actor and theater producer emerged. Sinden died at his Kent home in 2014 at the age of 90 from complications from longstanding prostate cancer .
