Ralph Thomas

Ralph Thomas (born August 10, 1915 in Hull , Yorkshire , † March 17, 2001 in London ) was an English film director .

life and career

Thomas came to film at the age of 17. He became a camera assistant through the smallest of temporary jobs and from 1935 to 1939 he worked as a film editor . He took part in World War II until he was injured in the war in 1944 and returned to the film business after the war. He initially designed advertising trailers and was then given the opportunity to direct his first film in 1949.

Thomas became one of the most successful British directors in the 1950s and was at home in many genres. His doctoral film series in particular was a box-office hit in Great Britain and established the actor Dirk Bogarde . With Bogarde he made numerous other films outside of the doctoral series.

His brother Gerald Thomas was also a successful director.
