Ralf Thomas

Andreas Ralf Thomas (born July 31, 1932 in Wurzen ; † September 17, 2018 ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian , publicist , author , historian and local politician ( CDU ). He worked for the Protestant Church until his retirement in 1997 - as a pastor and church historian. When he retired , Ralf Thomas was also involved in local politics: he had been a city councilor in Freital since 1999 and was last re-elected in 2014.

Life

Andreas Ralf Thomas was born in Wurzen as the son of Walter Thomas, owner of a small slipper factory, and his wife Elsa, where he attended elementary and secondary school as well as high school from 1939 to 1951 and was confirmed in 1947.

Thomas studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig from 1952 to 1957 . After graduating with the state examination and ordination on June 13, 1959, he took over his first pastor in 1961 in Dölzig and Priesteblich .

On May 6, 1962, Ralf Thomas and Ulrike Ott married in the monastery church of Grimma - the wedding was performed by the bride's father, Grimma 's superintendent Hellmuth Ott. The married couple Thomas have two daughters and one son.

On June 27, 1971, Thomas began his term of office as pastor at the Luther Church in Freital - Döhlen with his introductory service . He worked there until his retirement in 1997.

Ralf Thomas was a member of the scientific editorial board of the Sächsische Heimatblätter .

Honor

On July 6, 2007, the Theological Faculty of the University of Leipzig awarded church and state historian Ralf Thomas the honorary doctorate of theology (= Dr. theol. Hc) “for the tireless efforts in researching the history of Saxony and its church, for the preservation of national and cultural history in difficult times and for the exemplary connection between church practice and academic work ” .

Publications

Ralf Thomas has published essays and contributions on various historical topics since the 1960s. He was therefore in 2007 with the Commemorative life of faith, history and community responsibility - fonts for Ralf Thomas 75th birthday (Dresden 2007, edited by Wolfgang Burkhardt, 168 pages, without ISBN) honored: This publication is found under the heading Publications by Ralf Thomas - selection (pp. 148–163) the extensive bibliography of his publications since 1964.

The documentation by Ralf Thomas with the title Die Klosterkirche St. Augustin zu Grimma is also worth highlighting as accompanying material to the exhibition of the same name in the Frauenkirche zu Grimma (exact year not known, probably around 1987), in which for the first time in many years the fate of the then almost the dilapidated church house was exposed.
