action

The pilot Michael Quinn crashes with his machine in the jungle and survives injured. He is sent to Delhi to recover. There he is scheduled for a new task: he is supposed to learn Japanese in order to work as an interrogation officer. At school he meets the teacher Suzuki San, whom he had glimpsed before.

The two feel drawn to each other in the course of the lesson and meet secretly "off-duty". One of Quinn's classmates, the self-important officer Fenwick, soon notices the matter and tries to break the relationship. Quinn's boss, however, surprisingly shows understanding.

Quinn quickly notices that with "Sabby", as he calls Suzuki, a shadow of deep sadness weighs on her mind despite her external happiness. While on vacation, Quinn asks Suzuki to become his wife. She says yes, and the two spend the next few weeks in the midst of tropical nature, times of carefree.

Over time, however, a shadow of hidden and incomprehensible fear falls on both lives. Quinn suspects that Suzuki is hiding a secret. When a comrade is injured, Quinn has to go into action. Quinn is captured by the Japanese on a reconnaissance mission. When he refuses to divulge military secrets, he is tortured. Only his wife Suzuki's voice on the radio keeps him alive. When the news suddenly comes from a man's voice, Quinn learns from fellow prisoner Fenwick that Suzuki is seriously ill. With Fenwick's help, Quinn escapes and struggles through the merciless jungle, driven by fear for his wife. He arrives in Delhi and learns that Suzuki is in the hospital. Although there is still hope, she dies shortly after he has been to her bed one last time.

Reviews

"Carefully staged and played discreetly, the strongly emotional love story is integrated into an adventure story."
