John Fraser (born March 18, 1931 in Glasgow , United Kingdom - † November 7, 2020 ) was a British film and theater actor.
life and work
John Fraser began his professional acting career as a schoolboy and got his first stage roles. From 1953 he got various roles in the cinema and played young soldiers several times in war strips. Fraser was best known in the 1960s, when he was one of Britain's leading cinema actors and frequented leading roles. For his portrayal of Alfred Bruce Douglas in Ken Hughes ' The Trials of Oscar Wilde (The Trails of Oscar Wilde) , a film about the life of Oscar Wilde , he was in 1960 for the British Film Academy Award nominated. He played other important roles in Anthony Mann's period filmEl Cid (as " King Alfonso ") in Roman Polanski's thriller disgust as unfortunate admirer of Catherine Deneuve's main character, as well as in Karel Reiszs biopic Isadora over the dancer Isadora Duncan . While the cinema offers decreased from the 1970s, he played various guest roles in television series such as Doctor Who , Columbo , Randall & Hopkirk - Detektei mit Geist and The Bill until the mid-1990s.
In 2004 his autobiography Close Up was published , in which Fraser, who was temporarily marketed as a "heartthrob", came out as gay. In the book he gave, among other things, very open information about contemporaries such as Dirk Bogarde , Laurence Harvey and Rudolf Nurejew as well as about dealing with homosexuality in British show business at a time when it was still a criminal offense. By the turn of the millennium, Fraser had largely ended his acting career and spent his retirement with his significant other at a country estate in Tuscany . He died in November 2020 at the age of 89 after a year of cancer.
